what's funny is that half the things people are complaining about so much, are probably already changed at Mojang... this is a goddamn SNAPSHOT, meaning they jsut made a public download of the latest version of the game as it happened to be.
How the hell can people be so bloody thick? Does the majority of the community here not know how to read properly or something?
It's the internet. People knee jerk to anything they find shocking and quickly hammer out their angry posts, not bothering to read 15 pages of posts before it.
If SSP/SMP crossover happens in an update it would make running 24/7 servers a little harder due to the fact that most servers use VPS's to stay constantly running; it would be more difficult to run servers in the new format.
I just want to point out that a locally-hosted game will use your computer as the host, and thus you yourself won'tshouldn't have a need to use the internet. You'll only need a good internet connection to have other people on your map.
Also: Maybe it should be made so the host can pause the game, but nobody else can, or you can only pause when playing on your own? I like the whole real-time thing they have with opening your inventory, but I see no need to extend this to the pause menu-- or whatever you would call it if this change is implemented.

If you'll excuse me, I have to go write some fanfiction.
This is a great step, I can see it leading to a streamline in the code and allowing for more fluid updates. Having looked at all the people's comments both good and bad, I don't see that many "good" arguments against it. Like I said before the pro's outweigh the cons.
You know I'm disappointed because this just complicates all my server connections..
This is NOT WHAT NOTCH PLANNED!
Multiplayer and single-player really do not mix. However
this does somewhat benefit modders but it just complicates things..
First, only like 20% of this thread actually means what is this multiplayer, singleplayer merging is.
It was :
You start an SP world, your client both generate the chunks, mobs, doing all of the physics and at the same time, render it to your screen. If you run a task manager you will see, javaw.exe (only 1 proccess)
Now :
You start an SP world, a server automatically started and you automatically connect to it. No, no random people can enter your server at their will. I am sure in the update release it will be added a "whitelist system".
So, now we got 2 proccess, java.exe (the server) and javaw.exe (the client). Server generated chunks, mob, physics etc, and the client only renders it to your screen.
Good side :
- More FPS because your client only render it to your screen (i can play with 80+ fps now without any mod)
- Easier for modding. You only have to make mod once, not twice.
- Easier for people who dont know how to setup a real server. You can simply invite your buddies to play
Bad side :
- Slightly more memory consumption (only 100ish mb more)
My tought on this :
I 100% support this idea. Easy modding, less bugs, cheaper and easier multiplayer, more fps.
Alright, to start off, I'm going to say that This idea is NOT good! Now, I'm not just going to say that and be done with it. I'll show you WHY it is not good. Please, keep reading.
To begin with, MODS WILL BE DESTROYED BY THIS! If modders have to work to allow there mods to convert from singleplayer to multiplayer, most of them will just give up. They don't have that kind of time on their hands. Mods we all know and love such as Mo' Creatures, Millenaire, Redpower, Computercraft, More Creeps and Weirdos, etc. will dissapear. Leaving many minecrafters who play because of the mods with nothing. They leave, Mojang looses tons of players.
Yes, the worlds would be invite only. But wait? No one thought about the tons of Minecraft hackers! These people will do everything they can to find their way into your world, and destroy it. Then you have nothing left. And you start over, get far, and get grieved again. Many people would just give up on the game.
Also, not everyone's computer is capable of running a server, even if it is a tiny one! My friends laptop can barely run minecraft, and he can't even connect to servers! So then, there are people who won't be able to play minecraft at all, because their computer can't handle it!
Think also about the glitches! Those glitches that scare people away from multiplayer and into singleplayer, are now unavoidable!
Sorry, I don't usually hit Mojang so hard, and I know this only experimental. But guys, they won't change it if we don't speak up! I know that people liked the way things are already, and I'm in love with the idea of being able to create a server with a single click. But please, PLEASE don't remove single player!

Go hang a salami I'm a lasagna hog. Now read each letter backwards.
While I like the idea, partly because it means that only a single version of a mod will have to be developed to work with both SSP and SMP, I also don't like it because it'll probably lack many SSP-only features like pausing...
Still, if the long-awaited Modding API comes out at the same time, not being able to pause or use mods like Somnia seems like a tiny price to pay.
yah its a cool idea (smp/ssp crossover) if it were optional. what stinks is
1.you can't use most mods
2.you can't pause
3.you can't load previous worlds (i'm pretty sure at least
4. the modding API will be pointless with most mods (the ones that have to be converted to smp
and 5.it will be very complicated to have more than 1 world (i know it can be done, but how?)
so i really hope they don't include this, but if they do i hope its optional.
I think this is great. What better way to toss out the silly notion of TWO different code bases than to make single player ACTUALLY multiplayer acting as single player?
I HATE when this or that mod won't work in multiplayer.
This, with the coming mod api, might finally, -=finally=- mean that I won't be spending oodles of time trying to make mods work and then waiting to upgrade for fear of more work and having to lose worlds due to incompatibilities until I finally bite the bullet, upgrade and always lose near as much as I gain.
It will also make me try many more mods. I tend to avoid most of them for these reasons.
One codebase, one way for mods. It's just too bad that it took them this long...
OMG what is up with you guys the multiplayer is awesome what if you built a massive thing and you want to show your friend in AUSTRALIA or something then you could but it would be cool if they added a multiplayer mode and then a singleplayer that would be better but its alright how it is they should make it if you buy minecraft on minecraft.net there a package for like $10 dollars more and you get MCX360 and MC that would be cool
SMP generates and loads terrain slower than SSP -- the result of running two (somewhat) unrelated programs at once. If it's possible to fix that lose that generation lag, I'm with it 100%.
The problem with this is, if you have no internet for a day or so or you have no internet whatsoever after you download the game, it's impossible to play.

this is a stupid idea.
i only see one upside, mods like Aether will be multiplayer
