I can't believe this. I can't find any official way to contact anyone about this either. Notch is supposed to read these, so I'm going to hope he reads this:
I don't want to play anymore. I can't stand what is going on. Things are moving too fast and in the wrong direction. Ideas are fabricated, coded, and then the Mojang team just runs in some awkward direction with it. Ocelots had so much promise, but someone's(I assume Jeb's, I could be wrong) bias towards cats has rendered them a COMPLETE waste. It's ridiculous. They might as well be removed from the game. What is their purpose? To be annoying? Why would I want that in my game? They just need to be removed. They waste my computer's resources. It doesn't need to worry about spawning and controlling the AI of a creature that is meant to be a nuisance. The annoyance has become twofold because of that. This useless mob is now taking resources when I go into a jungle. Minecraft is resource demanding enough without wasted space. I have a computer that runs it fine, but not everyone does. And the features just keep on coming! Why not make things OPTIONAL??? How about official mods? Ocelots, could be in this. I know plenty of people who don't use potions or enchantment tables, or even the Nether or the End. Why not make these into mods that the user can use if he/she so pleases? Why not have the single player server be an optional feature, so that you can play single player, or invite a friend on it in if you so please by selecting a different option from the main menu? Where is the logic in taking away pausing??? I don't understand this at all. Not to mention this whole change would consume even more resources. WHAT HAPPENED??? I didn't buy Minecraft to watch it go down the drain! If this whole ridiculous notion goes trough, and things don't change quick, I WILL find a way to get a refund and abandon Minecraft for good.
You had something precious, new, genius, inventive, and wonderful. You started an international phenomena. Now you're desperate to shove whatever you can into it in the name of progress. Look at history, what other mistakes have been made in the name of progress? I just don't understand what has happened. Everything's moving too fast without any real consideration towards the future. All of the new features feel cheapened, like they were just thrown together. Why not go over some old features? New potions would be nice. New enchantments too. Maybe some FUNCTIONAL mobs that ADD to the game. Why not work with what you have, and perfect that first before trying to add to it? I just don't understand anymore. You need to go back and analyze what you've done. This game isn't just for you, it's for all the fans(a.k.a. customers) too. Just because you love an idea doesn't mean everyone will. Just because your computer will run Minecraft perfectly fine doesn't mean everyone else's can. Before adding anything else, go back and take a look. Look at what you've made. Look at how people react. Don't tell us what we want and how we want it. It didn't start that way. Don't let it end that way.
~To satisfy and please all aspects from the player community, I think it would be convenient to simply add a button that toggles "Start Listen Server" when clicking create world in Singleplayer. It would be easier to set up a LAN party game without having the host to run both Minecraft and the Server at the same time (which takes more resources compared to setting up a listen server).
Ok i just made an account because i can't stand these 6 year old complaining. SMP will still be SMP and SSP will still be SSP. They will just be run off of the same jar file. So you can just download it once make it a server, just play single player. Does not matter, some people are just reading it wrong because they think it will be force MP. I would like to think you should not be able to pause in Hardcore, because for one that makes it more hardcore. Yet if a Dev version does not have pause, who cares if a snapshot does not pause it also can't make me a sandwich but you hear me complaining. So when you can be a server if you want and if you don't that is fine. There is still going to be single player, everything will be just fine. Don't just you spiderman underwear in a knot.

see i your getting there, there would most likely be toggle button, but more likely even more, see Minecraft and the Server would be the same thing, just has the ability to do both.
Personally, I like the idea of this update. However, if SSP and SMP are the same thing, then what is the point of SMP?
they are the same jar file, that has the ability to do both. Instead of a server jar and a client jar they are then same. SSP and SMP are can me made on the same Jar.
That's not quite accurate - if this were implemented as you say, then the whole purpose of the merge would be flawed.
When this merge goes ahead, players will not have to run Minecraft AND a server both at once, as they do now. Rather, Minecraft will run AS a server. So instead of two things running, there will only be one.
For more detail, take a look at the thread linked to in my sig.
~Well, the purposed plans starts a Listen Server, not a Dedicated Server, there's a huge difference there. A listen server can be shut down at the host's will at any time, and listen servers has less capabilities in contrast to the dedicated version. The separate Minecraft_Server.exe (or .jar) is capable of running a dedicated server.
And to clarify the difference between SSP and SMP, Multiplayer (currently) is being operated off a separate .exe or .jar, allowing the server operator to issue commands without having to log into game.

Yes, I understand this, but what I'm saying is, why waste all the time in effort put into multiplayer? With this, you could simply create a SSP world, edit it to whatever you need, then remove the whitelist, and bam. You have yourself a server. It's like putting a big, "Play Minecraft" button in place of Minecraft singleplayer and multiplayer.
As far as the jar statement, I fully understand. But, my question to you is, do you understand what I was asking?
Do what I do for a living, do what I did for the Military, then you'll understand the real risks. And Irony much in your statement? kids these days have no real idea at all.
Just ignore it, some people on these forums can be rather rude.
I don't like this SSP/SMP crossover. Too, I don't know, It just doesn't work for me.
I agree. There is something totally wrong with where Mojang is heading. Since Notch stepped down, I have had an ominous feeling of fear for the game. At this point, any old random thing could be added to the game and it could suck very badly if they did something that everybody hated. One possible candidate for Sucky Thing That Everybody Might Hate is merging singleplayer with multiplayer. Those two are completely different and Singleplayer needs to stay like it is.
Just had to add, this guy isn't telling the truth. He apparently runs "network security" but he doesn't know enough to setup a firewall, apparently. Running "server background crap" isn't dangerous unless you are foolish with it. Any computer tech who works with networks could tell you it would be very easy to block Minecraft from accessing the internet and thus giving you a contained single player server.
@Adelwulf - Seriously, you need to have a look at how your computer works. At any given point you are running many "server like" programs. Hell, the browser you are using right now is sharing all sorts of information with all sorts of people. This is how the internet works. *face palm*
@Everyone else - Get with the 21st century! This is the digital age. Single player isn't changing. It is merging with multiplayer. You probably won't notice any difference once it is sorted out.
If you think for a minute, firewalls can stop half the stuff that's out there, you're an idiot plain and simple. I know plenty about how computers work, inside and out. Firewalls can be breached with ease. All people need are your IP address and go from there. You might need to take a look at yourself before trying to talk down to someone who knows a hell of a lot more than you do.
Once more, meging the two, is a mistake. Plain and simple. I've stated why already. And will not repeat it. Moreover, It's my view, and my opinion. You don't need to like it, or agree with it. That's what makes it an opinion. Move along if you don't agree. This is feedback for Mojang, not to discuss it with halfwits who either fanboy a dev for every single thing they do, or people who simply are so passive as to not understand reality.
Might want to look up opinions if you don't understand what that word means.

The 1 is because of the way you wrote it. It's the only thing that got me.
>Implying you'll get this
I can't believe how many people are whining. This is the best thing that has happened to Minecraft so far. They are not removing single player, idiots. They are merging what had become two separate games back into the one it was intended to be. This, along with the API is going to make modding easier across the board. All of our favourite modders will have an easier time shifting their work into a multiplayer environment. If you don't want to play multiplayer, don't invite anyone/enable the option.
Seriously... Internets, grow up. This is GOOD news.
This is a matter of perspective. Don't assume your limited understanding and personal view on the matter are based in fact. The only fact you were able to provide was concerning modding. Yes, this would make it easier. Everyone else is entitled to their opinion on this just as much as you.
I might not be understanding how this merger works, but it is a fact that internet will be needed?
If so, while I do not like how this idea sounds, I agree it adds some ease to mods and for some people, but could we at least get to make our single player worlds disconnect at will? My internet sucks like no one, and multiplayer for me is slow and laggy, having single player the same kills many hours I could spend on Minecraft while internet-less...
I am not saying to kill this idea, mind you, just a little help to those without great computers or internet. :S
I think this is great, right now at my house I have to have 3 computers up and running in order play multiplayer, it would be great to just have 2 of them running, just like we do with the phones/tablets. The benefits out weight the cons here, as the cons are mostly unbased fears of change.

That makes no sense. What do multiple machines matter? I host a server off of my computer and it runs fine. I'm not sure if this is some attempt to show off, or you really had nothing better to do than make groundless statements.
this is bad cuz we usualy pause the game in ssp by esc but now we cant if we exit it still going plus now we nid internet to play ssp
No you don't. All computers have a LAN network even when not connected to the internet, so no, you will not need active internet to play single player.
what's funny is that half the things people are complaining about so much, are probably already changed at Mojang... this is a goddamn SNAPSHOT, meaning they jsut made a public download of the latest version of the game as it happened to be.
How the hell can people be so bloody thick? Does the majority of the community here not know how to read properly or something?

Hosting a server and playing on this exact same server on the same computer took a lot more resources than playing SSP took (until now) because apparently many things were calculated twice - once by the server and once again by the client. Therefore, as the Minecraft-Wiki states, too, it is recommended to host and play on two different machines unless you have a powerful computer. As I understand the recent changes, this will change and once jeb_ is finished with the architectural changes in MC, SMP won't need more resources than SSP did before.

I consider the lack of a pausing function to be a bug. Also, you don't and you won't need internet to play SSP.
