Reading along too, the "pause" issue is going to be interesting in how it is solved. Is there any heads-up ideas on that? I would think something along the lines of a way-station that we teleport to while in pause mode that can send us back to our last location when we unpause may be a good way of doing pauses (such as the initial spawn point or last sleep point). If I was playing with friends and in the middle of being attacked by 10 mobs and I pause, I would not want to peace-out the game on my buds or leave them frozen waiting for me to unpause when I have the need to change to peaceful to heal/reset or to go for the proverbial pee break Totally a moot point if I am playing alone of course but I do have a few friends I would like to share worlds with and not in a running server multiplayer manner but in a 'joy stick A' and 'joy stick B' manner.
Maybe they could introduce private server commands /pause and /unpause, for internal use only, meaning that when you press ESC in SSP or when you are alone on a server, it pauses the whole server. I think that would be acceptable as it wouldn't affect the SMP part while allowing you to take a dump or whatever while being in singlepayer.
[...] Instead of adding crap with every update, for the next update fix every bug with the game, Minecraft at 1.0.0 was not at all bug free, it still plays no better, if not worse than beta versions
allow for increased view distance on both single and multiplayer!
Fixing every single bug before releasing another major update would take forever. I agree with you that it would be no harm if they fixed some old and annoying bugs before adding new stuff, but you have to see the other side, too: From a developer's point of view, adding new features to a product is far more interesting than bug tracing and fixing which can take you more than 5 hours per bug, depending on what else you have to fix to have it work or how good it is hidden. Sometimes '>' ("greater") instead of '>=' ("greater equals") in the code makes a huge difference and you notice your mistake after 3 hours looking at the same part of code, feeling like an absolute moron. That is why bugfixing is f*cking annoying!
But there is new hope: Once jeb's little experiment has been finished, fixing bugs will be a lot easier because he will have less code to look at.
I did really liked the idea, but on 12w18a, its so glitchy so i got back to 1.2.5.
Reasons:
-The pausing thing is like multiplayer, its here also when nobody is here, why not make it available only if we are atleast 2? Because, this is annoying as heck: When pausing, i got killed by a spider. I lost all my inventory.
-The FPS: Its not a big problem, it lowers -10 FPS, but not a big deal though.
-When hitting a mob, he seems slow, and because of that, i have to wait until the red on him is gone (I mean, when you hit him, he becomes red for a second right?) to hit him again.
-All my creative worlds became survival worlds with cheats, but no big deal (Again >.>), but the problem, is that, when i downgraded to 1.2.5, the creative worlds, became survival.
Dear Mojang.
Thank you. I am eagerly looking forward to this. I also would like to apologize for much of the negative reaction we are putting up here. I realize that change is often difficult and that uncertainty is frightening, but I am also a strong supporter of what you are doing here.
Dear brothers of the Minecraft (i.e., everyone else)
I rejoice at the minds that many of you exhibit, I am frustrated by the emotions of others. Please trust Mojang to deliver a product which continues to please you, just as they always have. That is their job. That is their income. That is their desire. To believe that they are seeking to turn away their loyal fans for empty thrills is foolishness.
Also, the handheld versions have been doing this for a LONG time already. It's no great step for Mojang.
p.s... I hate the idea of pausing. Please don't make my multiplayer pause! Every time I play SSP, the pesky pausing-"feature" messes me up--I can't work on another project while waiting for iron ore to smelt, trees to grow, night to fall, or my calves to mature.
Ok, this is just wrong. No one is going to update until there is one update that brings back singleplayer again. Nice going Mojang. This better not happen, or you actually might lose money.
How would they lose money? It is not a monthly subscription.
Also the singleplayer is still there, they are just making singleplayer able to run small servers for you and your friends to play with you.
The game is not really changing in anyway.
As a minecraft lover, I'm ashamed to say that I don't enjoy this snap. I do think its awesome to easily setup a server, but a lot of us don't always want to play with OTHER people. And I mean a lot of people. I'm working on two new adventure maps and I'm a little frightened about complete strangers coming on to my PRIVATE minecraft world, and destroying everything. Some people aren't that good with computers, so they can't just roll it back, reload the world and whatnot. I do love minecraft and EVERYTHING they have. But this is just getting ridiculous. I won't say that this update is a COMPLETE waste. I mean less lag = Epic. But still, I need to work on my adv. maps ALONE. But as many other people said, this is not final. I don't exactly ENJOY the snapshot. But I'm not trying to whine about it.
Overall, if I had to give this a diamond, Gold ingot, or iron ingot. I would go with .
Build on minecrafters!
You don't get it, do you. SP is still SP unless you ALLOW other people in. It just has the capability in case you do.
I don't get what all this grief is about, this is exactly what I always wanted Minecraft MP to be. For those who don't like it? Okay, don't use it. Large servers will still exist.
You want tips on how to make it better? Bring the old single player back, and leave it the **** alone! I don't want server mechanics built into a SINGLE player aspect of the game. I want a server based setup, I'll get a server. Keep single player just that.. SINGLE. It isn't true single player if you cannot pause the game, among other things. Take the commands OUT. Take server based crap OUT. This new crap.. IS NOT Single player at all. It's multiplayer without other people there..
(This is my opinion, you don't like it or agree with it, that's your deal. I don't care what you think of my view. this is my opinion on how to make it better. And that is somehting I am entitled to, to give my opinion. I do not have to agree with every single change made, and this is the only real thing that pisses me off the most of all the updates ever done)
I want SP to remain the same, fix the bugs yes, but leave online crap out of it. I don't care how long the mods take to update, that doesn't concen me, because I know they will eventually update. Again, It's my views and wants. They asked for opinions, and I gave mine. Simple as.
My 2 cents is that alot of stuff in the game visually and mechanics wise has always worked in single player and you had to make the sacrifices to play multiplayer and deal with the stuff that didn't work right., Now with this update they'll have more time to update the game for a single format, which could be a good thing. The main issue comes in with seamlessness. The new "single" player format must retain the exact same look and feel of the original or it will be the death of Minecraft for many players. Most people don't want to be server admins and having the server being a visible feature of people's interaction with the game will put many people off. The server should be a "service" that runs quietly in the background with the server command functionality integrated into a gui. People should have full control over what happens when a "server" is started as well as not even have to go in and look at that stuff if they don't want to.
Essentially... If a player goes in selects a seed, selects the world options, and starts a game... they shouldn't even be concious of the fact that there is a minecraft server running in the background unless they choose to open those options up and start fiddling with them.

There shouldn't even be a server running at all in the background of a SINGLE player game. There is no point. There should be an option to select REAL Single Player, and online single player. To give us the option if we want a server running at all. This kind of trash should not be forced upon us. Period.
@Rhymane Flameheart For one, I do not like the fact that my computer will be acting as a server while I am playing single player. I do not want that kind of crap going on in the background. As stated before, if you didn't read it then..
If I wanted a server, I'd get one. I do not want one. Server aspects of anykind, do not belong mixed with single player portion of the game. If they (Mojang) are unwilling to keep up the workload for updates, that's on them. They should have thought of that during Infdev. or during Beta, not now with the actual final game is out. Those were the proper times to do this kind of stuff.
There are some people out there, like myself, who do not want this intergration to happen. Because we like Single Player how it is now. 100% SEPARATE from multiplayer.
Other games have used this method to run things, and no-one even notices unless they are a coder and go poking through the files. There is a point; a point that's been explained by people here many times over. You just don't want to see that point. And if there was an option for it, then that would defeat the purpose of making these changes in the first place as the code would still not be unified. After 1.3 your game will look, run and feel exactly like it used to; the only noticable difference will be how fast the game updates in the future and how fast bugs get fixed. Which is a good thing.
See above post. And if you think this is a good thing.. then LMAO...
[edit] LMFAO.. you are so blind you just don't get it. after reading your other post.. you're just a blind fanboy plain and simple. sucking up everything they throw out without rhyme or reason. Have fun with that. I've posted my opinions to Mojang, and yet people like you feel the need to drag it out. This change should not happen. Plain and simple.
Minecraft is the only PC game I play, because it is the way it is (as of right now) I don't play anything on my computer that requires some sort of server background crap going on. Because it isn't needed for a single player aspect. Running a server from your computer, is a great open door for many things. I run network security for a few different places .. I am well aware of every risk behind garbage like this. They are opening the worst door they could ever do. But I wouldn't expect most of you to understand that.
With that, I'm done here. Defend this all you want.. without a true solid base single player, I won't continue playing it should this crap update go through as shown so far. That is all.
None of you would be complaining about anything right now if Notch had not made that basic 'mistake' of focussing on Singleplayer right in the beginning. Most of you wouldn't even be aware that there was a server running in the background as it wouldn't concern you at all.
Also, as someone else already pointed out some pages before, what jeb_ is trying to establish in Minecraft is a game architecture that almost every modern game uses and everybody is fine with it, you just don't know because you don't need to know. Instead of complaining about **** you don't understand, you should read the posts made by those few sane people who try to explain it to you and be grateful that Mojang informs you about deep changes within their products.
P.S. Get your definitions of 'server' straight
EDIT: And now I accidentally gave a positive reputation for the wrong post and I don't know how to reverse it -.-
Oh, I get it now. You're a paranoid fool who thinks that the entire internet is out to hack his computer; and who immediately insults anyone who challenges his views. Ok, right, got it; say no more.
Do what I do for a living, do what I did for the Military, then you'll understand the real risks. And Irony much in your statement? kids these days have no real idea at all.
