Personally, I like the separation of single player and SMP modes. Sometimes I just want to play alone so single player mode is ideal.
What I would like to see is a list of tested mods that can be selected/deselected at the startup screen. If you select a mod to use, you will be prompted to download the latest stable version. All mods that are downloaded should go into a mod folder within the minecraft directory.
Also if you have mods installed and login to a SMP server, any mods that are not supported by the server should be disabled. If any mods on the server need to be installed on the client, you should get a notice of which mods are required and receive a prompt to download them.
Everyone here is raging without even understanding how this damned thing is going to work! How do you know exactly what features there are going to be? Mabee there will be a way to pause the game, and mabee you can choose to not let anyone in to your world. If mojang fixes the new bugs, which they ARE, then it would be just like single player. And on top of it all, instead of raging on this post, which jeb may or may not read, why dont you actually Give Mojang Some Feedback! If enough people want a feature or not, then it will be added or removed! That is how minecraft has worked since the beginning, and i dont see any reason for it to suddenly change now! C'mon poeple, think about it!
STOP COMPLAINING!
Mojang knows what theyre doing and theyre smarter than a bunch of 4 year old complainers. They
know what to do and what not to do with the singleplayer/multiplayer thing.
Why do you get so upset about it? all it is is you can invite other people to your singleplayer world,
Why do you get so mad about that? Its not like all your worlds will be deleted or something.
They DON'T know what they're doing. Tons of people will be pissed. Some people don't have a strong enough computer to handle multiplayer, and some don't want to deal with **** like griefers. Get the **** out.
Jesus Christ, have NONE of you ever hosted a local server before? It runs perfectly ****in' fine, no lag, no mess. :T
Any other "terrible" thing you're experiencing in the snapshot is obviously a bug, so just report it and let Mojang handle the rest. Without Notch being around to **** everything up, I'm more than certain this update will be a good one and will be for the best in the long run.
AND AGAIN, THIS IS A LOCAL MULTIPLAYER SERVER FUNCTION. AS IN LAN. NO ONE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME NETWORK CAN ACCESS THE SERVER. NO GRIEFERS CAN GET IN UNLESS YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE TOTAL DICKS.

So I suppose if they don't know what they're doing, Minecraft is just this big chunk of bad code written.
Nice theory about them.
Also, it takes about the same resources as normal with this snapshot. They won't have to deal with Griefers as they are going to add like an invite system.
Answer please. It will still lag more than the current SSP, right? Even when 1.3 is out?
So far from what I experienced, saw, and heard, it shouldn't lag anymore than regular SSP does now. People are over reacting because servers are complicated right now and people think it will make single player more complicated and laggy. The thing is that for this screenshot, the single player server you're running right now isn't a big worldwide server that anyone can go on with the right IP, it's a local server. Also, if you've ever ran a server, it barely/doesn't lag at all for you because you're computer is hosting it.
My only problem with the update is that you can't disable mp mode... oh, and also I can't use my
@echo off
Title Minecraft Launcher
set APPDATA=%CD%\
start %CD%\minecraft.exe
anymore, so I can't use multiple minecraft directories.
Pros:
Able to play minecraft with your friends whenever you want (?)
Not needing to meddle around with server files (+5)
Server-specific texture packs (+5)
Cons:
One jar file (-3)
Not able to be disabled (yet...)
A little bit of extra lag (-1)
This cross over idea is AMAZING! I love the idea of that. Now I can invite my brother to my Hardcore world to mine and adventure with me! This is great. I just hope it doesn't ruin the mods like some people say...

Since I fell asleep last night, I'd like everyone who has an issue, question, or other concern regarding this change to go read my last posts and in addition, any other long posts by people who have been able to spell "you" correctly.
Finally, I'd like everyone to realize that Mojang has virtually rewrote Minecraft in its entirety. Of course something's going to break at first. Wait for the next weekly please.
I Love The Idea Of Singleplayer with multiplayer but its messed up with joining it and it glitches out ECHNANTMENT TABLES. Even With The /xp command but I like the idea of using commands in singleplayer not multiplayer singleplayer(you get no privacy)

1) Servers lag less then singleplayer so who ever says it'll lag is a imbasule and a ignoramus
2) Its an OPTION
3) People who never played multiplayer should not hate because they dont understand how it works, they make this stereotype that all servers have greifers and admins are corrupt, i've been to many servers and the admins, mods, ops been nice and had anti-griefing implemented in there server and if a admin become corrupt a resposible owner would ban him
4) Newbs should not Judge everyone especialy Veterains
well now, all I know is that under the current setup (full version) some calculations are done by both the server and the client (like lighting, server to determine spawns, client to determine graphics). if this is not changed, we will see more lag. also, as sonicdude624 pointed out, smp needs internet, which not everyone has all the time (i.e. laptops on the move).
edit: in case I did not make this clear, what I said about more lag is because calculations would be done twice, which is unnececary in single player
okay first off people need to calm down. 1 this is a snapshot so things will be improved and tweeked as they see fit. 2 have any of you tried to run a server yea try it and i'm sure you'll stop bitching. 3 who cares about pausing how hard is it to just disconnect from a world and come back it takes 2 mins max. and 4 I'm sure they are not going to force anyone to be connected to the internet i'm sure they will keep the offline mode for the future. so stop crying over spilt milk when no one has knocked over the glass.

You must not understand how things work, because that's completely impossible.

Please Someone respond to this...Who thinks that some of these newer updates are really starting to detererate Minecraft as a whole.
