Forgive me if its been said earlier in the 22 pages, but BOOKWORM plugin!
My server relies on it for our tutorial. Granted, that is a server plugin, not vanilla, but it allows books to be kept in a bookcase, too. Here is the link for that: http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/bookworm/
I'd prefer just making a book and a bookcase than stalking squid. I write with blood!

"But I must kill the creeper!" said Steve "No you are the creeper." said Notch And then Steve was a creeper.
I downloaded the snapshot but when I go and open a book and quill, the tan background is gone, instead is just a white box but I can still type in it. I tried re installing it but I still have the problem. Can someone help?
This is a little random video I made about the new snapshot, just kinda showing how the books can troll! check it out! But I really do actually love the new update, its gonna help alot!
And now, welcome wooden slabs as the most efficient fuel ever!
150% more efficient than coal and even better than charcoal (and makes it obsolete for fuel)!
That's just the block name used for Silverfish hiding in blocks within the stronghold. If you give yourself 97 (the block's ID), the tooltip will say Stone Monster Egg to signify that it's basically a stone block with a monster (Silverfish) inside.

8 wood -> 8 charcoal -> 8*8=64 items burned
8 wood -> 8*4=32 planks -> 32*2=64 wooden slabs -> 64*1.5=96 items burned
the way data for the books is stored is the same way as enchantments on tools so it doesn't mess up the metadata and you can have many possibilities
Agree - it's declared as a block type. Anyone worked out what it does?
EDIT: OIC
I still reckon they look like Cybermats
