This is sad really, I respect both parties and now am going to have to back away from both of them just to stay out of the drama. doesn't mean I back away from the game though. I've seen this happen before with an even larger game company (*cough*) Blizzard (*cough*) and an ordinary SC2 bronze-league player. I just hope this one get settled
Dont jump the gun guys, theyre referring to the yogscast, not Simon and Lewis directly, all these allegations could be aimed at someone from yogscast who may just edit videos or writes a few scripts, S & L might have been well behaved throughout, but whats to say the rest of the team were not?
I have to agree, we should probably just wait it out until the Yogscast replies to all this.
The people who are taking sides already are frankly being idiots. You don't take sides in an argument without hearing both views of the situation first, which is exactly what half the posts in this topic are and will be.
I'm probably biased in my view of the situation, given that i did in fact learn about Minecraft through the Yogscast and purchased it thanks to their videos. But here are my honest thoughts on the situation (assuming anyone cares);
Its unfair to assume that just because you dislike their videos or haven't heard of them that the Yogscast is not a major contributing factor to Minecraft's success. Their Youtube channel has almost 1.2 million subscribers, and their first Survival Island video has over 4.5 million views. They definitely have an influence and a place in the success of the game to this point.
That said, if they are truly acting in the perceived way as Notch is tweeting, then it is extremely uncharacteristic of the two by what we see on their many videos. They're generally both well mannered and cracking jokes constantly; british humor is a thing that isn't always inherently obvious, but i very much doubt that what they said to the kid was meant to be taken as an insult by Notch. As well, if the kid (despite age) was asking for the Yogscast to sign something for him, then its most likely that he has watched their videos, and they tend to swear quite often in those videos.
As someone who has grown up in America this past century I can tell you that you hear much worse things on the playground than the word "****". Hell, if he is playing Minecraft and reads these forums he sees much worse regardless.
As well, what amuses me is Notch's comment about how Minecraft is a community centered around sharing and caring. I'm sorry, does he play his own game? I can't remember the last time i visited these forums and read a topic that did not have multiple people arguing with one another, calling the OP an idiot/troll and generally NOT being caring people.
All in all, people need to calm down and be logical; of course, something that isn't likely to happen.
Edit: On a final note, if I was asked to travel across the world on a 24-hour trip to appear at a convention, damn right I would want some compensation for it. I don't know if you've noticed but airline travel isn't cheap.
This game has grown just because of the community, yet notch seams to be selfish and lazy.
Lets say he prommised 50 things, yet he gave us 25.. While yogscast seam to earned notch at least 4 milion euroes. Yet they couldnt get even a few petty tickets..
Both these guys sound like chumps. Notch sounds like he's trying to pull a PR move because some little kid heard the **** word. Simon and Lewis are "famous" with the minecraft gamers and thats IT, i dont know what made them feel like a big deal but they really arent. I wouldnt be suprised if this wasnt all a stunt. just look at 'em
If you watched the Yogscast/Notch interview, you could see a large disconnect between their sense of humors. What doen't help is that Notch isn't exactly a fluent English speaker, as the Yogs had to repeat what they said a few times. This is why I think it may be a misunderstanding and/or taking something too hard.
But until we hear what the guys themselves say, there is no point in taking sides.
Uhh, c'mon guys are we 5? Everybody is making a big deal out of this because these two guys supposedly dropped the F bomb on a kid? You realize that kid probably hears that word every single day in school right? They say it to one person and everybody flips their ****? As much as Notch and the rest of the minecraft community denies it, Yogscast plays a bigger role in the fanbase then they think. Let's look at the numbers. A video posted on their channel yesterday already has almost 1 mil views. That's a million people who have decided to either buy this game or at least dedicate 30 minutes to watching these guys play it. The game costs about 20-30 bucks depending on whether or not they feel like putting up a discount so that's about 20 or 30 million dollars given to Notch. It's free advertising and they are celebrities for it. Yogscast asking to be paid isn't surprising or even rude. They make their living off of minecraft videos and minecraft has made more then 30 million dollars because of yogscast. Notch and the minecraft community is really making a big deal out of paying these two celebrities to travel half way across the world to a crappy convention? When, I might add, they could be at home promoting this game further, making it more money, and making more money themselves. I can almost guarantee these two men regret even stepping foot into that convention. And to the people who are saying "I didn't hear about minecraft from these two idiots, I heard it from a friend." My friends, it's called word of mouth. People see their videos, like the games, tell their friends. If every person who saw their videos [over a million subs] told a friend about the game they watched the amount of income would be doubled. So Notch can thank yogscast for millions upon millions of dollars going into his pocket. To treat somebody who's made you so much money with so much disrespect is appalling.
