It kinda doesn't seem like Notch. He never said things like that. Then again the Yogcast guys are egocentric dumbasses and probably deserve it.
I mean, saying they made Minecraft famous? Demanding for money to go to the convention about the game that made them what they are? Saying Mojang are a bunch of dumbasses? Telling the kids to f**k themselves for asking them to sign something? I really hope they got banned from Minecon.
Back when the 'Yogbox' was first released, the yogcast blacklisted modders who didn't want to include their hard work in the yogbox. They slandered my favorite modder, kodachizero. Ever since then the Yogcast has been tainted in my eyes.
The Yogscast is entertaining, but immature and egotistical. This came as no surprise
Calling Mojang Nerds? Thats funny Yogscast thats just funny. is not a nerd he is a computer programer. Your the ones with the fatty nerd that talks about jaffacakes all the flippin time.
Why do many people seem to think Yogscast JUST to minecraft and are purely dedicated to it?
Have alot of "those" people actually watched thier videos or do they just watch the minecraft ones?
They were big doing wow tactics before hand and do many many games.
They are not dedicated just to minecraft.
Also people choosing sides show a high level of ignorence and a high level of immaturity. Its a good idea to find out exactly whats gone off from both sides and wait and see the outcome before picking sides and pointing fingers.
Seriously grow up. Thats obviously going to be a problem as from watching the minecon videos theres obviously a large portion of kids playing minecraft and on these forums...
Looks like the witchhunt on both sides is in full swing, here's my two-pence on the latest developments, point by point.
Yogscast repeatedly insulted people, talked behind their backs, refused to cooperate, and acted like total spoiled divas nonstop.
This really doesn't sound like the Simon and Lewis I know, who are generally extremely chilled out fun people, both online and in real life.
They called us "a bunch of nerds who don't know how to run a company", demanded that we pay them to come here (nobody else got paid).
Alright so, when you bring celebrities to a convention, do you generally ask them to come for free? If you run a Star Trek convention, do you ask Riker and Spock to attend gratis? You expect them to go without compensation, which usually includes transatlantic flights and accomodation for several people as well as an appearance fee? No, you don't. Conventions rely on the celebrities in question to bring people to the event, drive traffic to the stream and add value. Yogscast are not just a couple of random fans, this is their full-time job. I've been doing events for a while now as a commentator, if an event didn't offer to pay for my services I'd have to think twice about going. Why? Because it's my job, doing things for free devalues you and it's very easy to be taken for a ride if you act like a push-over. If it was down the road, sure, maybe. If it's half way across the planet, well yeah, I'd kinda want to get paid for doing that gig, as would pretty much every eSports commentator. Yogscast went to do a panel and sign autographs, that in itself is a service, not to mention the fact that it takes them away from their regular jobs. The fact that no-one else got paid does not indicate a problem with Yogscast, but with a multi-millionaire staffing a convention with volunteers. Having seen some of the footage from Minecon, "a bunch of nerds who don't know how to run a company" is exactly how I'd describe Mojang and y'know what? I wouldn't even say that's a bad thing. The whole grass-roots "hey we're just one guy and his idea who made it big" thing is endearing and honest, but as we've just seen from this rampage, professionalism is not the highest priority of Mojang at the moment and they really don't know how to run a company. That line can be taken in many different ways, particularly coming from 2 British guys that are known to take the **** (like every British guy ever born).
And they claim they're the reason minecraft is big and that we should thank them more than anyone else in the community. They're total dicks
They are certainly the biggest driving force behind Minecraft at present, you only need to look at the view count. After Seananners stopped doing Minecraft content, Yogscast became a massive source of free promotion for the game. Their videos hit the frontpage of Youtube every day, showing Minecraft off on the second largest search engine in the world time after time. I'm not sure Notch fully grasps just how much that many views on Youtube can do for your product. To give another example, the Magicka developers told me that they attribute the majority of their sales to WTF is Magicka and The Yogscast and TotalBiscuit play Magicka. This would make sense, if you look at the views on those videos, they are massive. For an indie company, Youtube and word of mouth are the two biggest forms of free marketing available and guess what generates word of mouth? Well how about literally over a million people watching and talking about Yogscast Minecraft videos? If anything, Notch does actually sound a little ungrateful here which is a rather flabbergasting attitude from an indie dev and one I've never seen before (those who don't know, my main source of income is my WTF is series which hilights indie games, it's fairly well viewed and I've had nothing but gratitude from devs whose games I've promoted). I suppose when you get as big and as wealthy as Notch, the attitude can change.
A kid wanted them to sign something I had signed, and they said they'd cross it out and put "**** you" there instead.
Welcome to Yogscast humour and more to the point, British humour. The easily offended need not to apply. How old was this kid? The Yogscast demographic is quite young anyway and there is plenty of harsh language in their videos, not to mention they would hear much worse on the playground. This sounds like a joke, not a particularly good one, but a joke none-the-less and not worth getting in a tizzy over.
Everyone else in the Minecraft community is all about respecting and caring. They're not. They're an isolated island of egos.
Well no, it's not Notch, you've bred one of the most retarded fanbases in gaming history. It's not your fault, but the entire Minecraft community is not in fact, about respecting and caring. There are subcommunities within it that are, /r/Minecraft is a great subreddit from what I can see, Yogscast also has a large community of it's own over on it's forums that does just as you describe. However, you also have a lot of immature, raging assholes in your "community" as well as plenty of others who are just out for themselves. Those people don't do massive charity streams like Yogscast do, they don't promote mods (and yes I am aware of the issues with the Yogbox, nobody goes through life without ****ups), they don't act as an extremely important stimulus to the community that you apparently love so much. Yogscast is without question one of the most important forces within not only Minecraft but at this point, gaming in general. They wield a massive amount of influence and they make a hell of a lot of people very happy.
Who knows what actually happened, it will be interesting to see if the community points the pitchforks back at Notch after Yogscast is able to make their statement (they are probably still on a plane right now) and tell their side of the story. Everyone loves a good witch-hunt, but a little perspective here please and do we really have to air this dirty laundry in public?
Unfortunately, many of you here, like all internet ragers, seem to have jumped the gun and started to take a side without even seeing both sides of the story. Many people here seem to discount how much the Yogcast and other Youtubers (TB, Jessie, Seananners, etc) really helped Minecraft. Like TB said, check out what it did for Magicka. Also check out other Indy games. You really don't think high profile commentators have an effect on a game's success or fall?
To get started, I'm 16, do not take my intelligence level for that of a stereotypical teen, do not stereotype me, and if you disagree with me, don't try to substitute a counterargument with observations of mechanical errors in my writing. If it's incomprehensible, then you may speak on it's behalf.
Anyways, this dispute in itself is wierd. Wierd in a sense that of all people that would royally upset Notch, it would be the Yogscast. Wierder yet that Notch would actually post about it on Twitter (likely due to the tremendous amounts of tweets and messages from upset fans, many of which who probably don't know both sides.) We can't really assume much yet, Yogscast hasn't posted their side, and Notch hasn't posted his take on their side. But we can make a few educated guesses.
Here's what I do know. Notch is a good, honest person. This is an opinion, but before this dispute I'm sure that it's fact that most Minecraft players would agree. I would never think that the money has affected him too much or went to his head, but that's not relevant right now. This being said however, Notch wouldn't post about an event like this on Twitter unless something really upset him.
This is where the whole "dispute" could branch off in a few different directions. "It could be a publicity stunt/practical joke from both parties." I doubt with the following and age variation of the community that Notch would EVER use the "F-Bomb" unless he was serious, plus I think he'd be too smart to not foresee the negative response he would get for doing so. "Notch is a spoiled brat and overreacted to harmless British humor." Let's look at this. Whether or not Notch is "spoiled" is up to you. But the "harmless british humor" has no place in such an environment. Minecraft is a game that suits all ages. "Kids act like they've never heard that word before, they need to grow up, man up and be mature." If this is your argument, then your a little bit ignorant, sorry to say. Swearing is all fine and dandy in an adult only environment like Adult-Con or whatever it's called. But if you have a game that accomodates to all ages, the convention is going to have a similar environment. Like it or not, you shouldn't pull the maturity card on this one. It's not about maturity, it's about inhibitions, the same that keeps people from swearing in malls (hopefully) when there are families with children around. The mall wasn't made just for adults and neither was minecraft. And the third possibility is "Yogscast are full of themselves and think they're entitled to special rights because they have a YouTube channel." This is the one I'd lean towards, but only to an extent. I wouldn't completely rule out Yogscast or their staff being a bit conceited, but I don't know them too well, but I know Notch enough to say with confidence that he wouldn't hate on a group of people unprovoked, ESPECIALLY one whose brought as much recognition to the Yogscast.
The most logical thing that happened is either a misunderstanding of some sort or maybe Yogscast did something that Notch didn't think was acceptable. It's definitely wretching, because I don't think Yogscast would treat fans like that, but I would never expect Notch to lie, or say something without having a good amount of confidence to back up his claim.
My number one bout though, are the people up in arms because they're mature enough to handle swearing and think it was blown out of proportion. Notch cares about his community, and I'm sure he wanted to keep the event family oriented. It was hosted in "sin-city", true. This doesn't mean that they had kids on slot machines, or they had a buffet in a strip club. If it bothers you that the Minecraft community is like this, then don't be a part of it. The egotistical "I'm better than you because I'm older than you" argument that people make has no place on this forum, you can complain endlessly about how much you hate the maturity level of the community, but in the end, you walked up to the lego box and decided to try to fit in. Adults are allowed to enjoy it without judgement, but if you start moaning about the "children" who play this game and participate in the forums, first of all, remember what game it is, second of all, keep your own maturity level in mind if your raging at 12 year olds about being immature.
You can disagree with me on anything, but I'm not about to watch the community that has a reputation for being one of the friendliest and most accomodating groups of people be torn apart at this hands of ignorant people who think they have self entitled authority for being superior to young teens.
This is Minecraft, and ironically enough, to fit in and make this community better, you just need to follow what you learned in kindergarten, be nice to others, treat others how you want to be treated and don't "bully" others (however you want to take bullying, but in my opinion, anything said that's demeaning is bullying) it's as simple as that.
Don't like it? You're probably better suited in the Call of Duty Forums, an 18+ where it's okay for adults to belittle children and you don't see anything but complaints and rage, keep that there, and keep the successful Minecraft community as is. We have our faults, but I like to think that for the size of the community, we're mostly good people. : )
For anyone who is slamming yogscast or notch, the full story hasn't come out yet. I'd suggest waiting to see what REALLY happend. Or at least here the other side of the story rather than just Notch's if there is noone who isn't biased to tell the story.
I do love the yogscast but hearing this has made me lose my respect for them.
I am interested in what they have to say about such things as crossing out notches signature and replacing it with Fu** You, especially on something belonging to a little kid.
Notch is shooting himself in the foot with this one big time.
It pays to bite your tongue and say only extremely non-committal diplomatic things at a time like this, especially since the Yogscast guys haven't even been able to release a statement yet.
Even if it turns out *not* to be a misunderstanding (which would surprise me, honestly) its still always better to present a good image and not respond in kind to insults, poor behavior, etc etc and so forth.
I never heard about Yogscast until a long time after i played Minecraft. And swearing in front of children is just wrong. Yogscast is kind of funny but not funny enough that i watch every episode that they release. I'm not saying i completely HATE yogscast (not yet at least) but if they keep up their crap and cause anymore drama with Notch i'm going to get a bunch of people together and spam their Yogascast's inbox with hate mail. Notch has had enough drama with Bethesda.
notch should stick something unique to their accounts. Like a widdle baby diaper and baby rattle.
They could use that to get more views. herp derp. /lameyoutubepersonalities.
I think my favorite part of this thread so far has to be that the people who are calling Yogscast fans idiots/children and are saying that anyone who defends them is just a fanboy, are the same people who are turning around and praising Notch and believing that every word on his twitter is true.
For the love of whatever nonspecific deity you might or might not believe in, where is the EVIDENCE that anything on Notch's twitter is true?
Is there proof of the Yogscast writing "**** you" on some kids poster?
Is there proof of the Yogscast saying "we're the reason minecraft is so popular"?
Is there proof of the Yogscast saying "Oh yeah, we totally deserve more money for this"?
Is there proof of the Yogscast calling Mojang "a bunch of nerds who don't know how to manage a company"?
If someone does have proof of these allegations (which is all they are, allegations) than please do come and post a link to them here. I'm sure everyone would love to see it, I certainly know I'd like to see where people are getting their facts from.
