Just went and checked the stats.minecaft.net map, and it seems it cannot load... Either they are doing work on it, or is it proof positive of the extra load on the log in server.

running a server from a client is extremely recourse demanding so any hope of optimizing for bad/old computers is now dead, also now this creates a huge problem for client stabilization because if your client crashes so dose your server, so crash bugs will be unacceptable
You don't need to port forward if you are on a LAN.
Or does no one do LAN parties anymore?
umm... lan ya that works if you have like 10 computers in your house connected, and you all live with in that area. honestly who dose though? and no, no one uses lan.
its kinda to late not to port forward i have a classic server, also you bring up a good point most people don't know how to port forward and there for if minecraft doesn't add a port forwarder what is the point of this? (yes i know you can pay to have a service port for you but i think that that is bs to pay some one to do something you can do your self)
They can't add a port forwarder because it needs to be done at the router level and since there are probably a million different router types... it won't work.

Old FPS: 15-18
New FPS: 20-30 FPS.
I found that the server running in the background made MC run faster (in framerates) however there are quite a lot of lag spikes for me.
Well... See the info, read the list of features, got quite excited.
Downloaded the snapshot, installed it, launch MC, got BSOD.
Turn the air blue, deleted downloaded snapshot, re-download, install, launch MC - yay, it's working!
Click on my saved world.
The moment I See "loading level" info I realise what the f*** I've just done - I send all my enchantements down the drain...
Turn the air blue again. And again.
Not exactly the good start...
lol when will people learn not to use snapshots on their main install...
Silly people, Snapshots aren't for dumb people. <- Actually, that was rude. I'll rephrase it. Snapshots != N00bs....
Damn. I hate that. I really, really hope it's removed. Cookies are supposed to be trophies of your dungeon conquering skills. What's next? Craftable saddles? Probably. Soon enough we will be able to craft mossy stone... unfortunately...

Snapshots != Final.
The only thing I don't like about this server / client combo is that it takes a while to start up on some computers (like mine) and it times out too quickly. Then I click back to menu and it stops the server. Eventually it works and it works consistently later but it'll always be like that making a map for the first time.

Server runs on it's own thread. This means that for anyone with more than one core they will see big improvement in the speed as the client and server logic can now be shared across the cores. That also means you could force-kill the client and your friend can happily keep on crafting on your server.
PS. Has anyone tried doing /stop in the client yet to kill the server thread? I'm at work so I can't play with it right now.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Just tried it, it will stop the server as usual and disconnect you from the game.
I still don't understand how we are supposed to "invite" Others to our server. I get the server, and how it's now in a single player map. But not the connecting.

Later they'll have a way to do something like /invite I'm sure, but for now, you can just run the single player map and when someone else has the snapshot just port-forward, and connect to your computers IP address.
i think the server stuff should stay with the server.jar file, and the singleplayer stuff stay with the minecraft.jar file. don't mix the two up, all is does is add lag and complicated stuff i don't like. for one, i somehow predict it messing with my ability to run a separate server on the same computer. what do you think happens if i start up my dedicated server.jar, then decide to play singleplayer? i'll tell you what happens, minecraft trying to open another server on a port that's already being used. so for the duration i have a server running, i cannot play singleplayer at all! on top of that, say that's not an issue, all it does is put extra strain on the login servers, and makes it take forever to open my singleplayer world, because it has to first load everything into another process, login, and THEN load the world. this snapshot is actually taking a few giant steps in the wrong direction. like i was saying, throw the server in the .minecraft folder in the trash, or make an option for playing singleplayer without having a server running. all i see the server thing as is LAZINESS! the reason for it is so that they don't have to update the minecraft.jar file, and FORCE you to use a server.jar file. i am NOT happy with this, and unless people stop being lazy, i will throw minecraft in the trash bin, as i am not at all happy with this snapshot AT ALL!

Everyone who has 'real life' friends usually play LAN with them >.> Most people I know would take LAN games over WAN/Net games anyday xD

Lazy to put it in one file?! No, you're completely wrong! Also, this is a snapshot, nothing is final. No one is forcing you to update.
No one is also forcing you to play either. You're one of the people in the community who just nit pick at every thing. So if you decide to leave, goodbye and good riddance.
To be honest, you know what I find lazy?

long story short, unless mojang throw this mess with the server thing in the trash, or give an option to turn it off, this texture pack will be scrapped.
Important! This week’s snapshot is extra experimental!
This week we’ve started working on separating the server logic from the client.

it would be done through friends list but as of yet it hasn't been added.
I don't see why it is a big deal that coca beans can be harvested now. I mean honestly, diamonds are a trophy item not just because it looks pretty, but it has the best durability. Coca beans are only useful in making brown dyes/wool and cookies. Cookies aren't even useful, only restoring half a hunger point and having extremely low saturation. I do love how every time an item in minecraft gets a bit easier to find, everyone cries that everything else will be easier to find/craft too.

This. The community of this game is going down a mountain (Not talking about the actual users who don't complain at every single thing...)
I mean FFS, where is your (successful as this one) game?
P.S. You all just lost the game
