I think that they should have an option in the settings called convert to single player/multiplayer so you can kick or let in everyone you want to come. That way you could control the people trying to come into your map. And you could take their stuff and buildings.
Another thing I've noticed, this has mad single player nearly impossible for people who have never set up a server. You now will need knowledge of servers and server hosting to play single player. Which is a bit unfair on the younger half of Minecraft players, and some of the oldwer ones who know nothing of all this server stuff...
Indeed, unless they fix this issue, a lot of people will simply quit playing and recommending this game if they have to open command prompt for any reason. After I ran minecraft_server.jar just once though I'm no longer getting "Connection Lost." Either way I hope this is reported as a bug and is fixed before release. I also miss being able to pause the game in singleplayer mode.
I enjoy reading these threads simply to laugh at the morons they are frequented by & the youth of today who seemingly can't do reading & understanding at the same time...

Can singleplayer stay singleplayer ,adn when you go to multiplayer you can start a world like that, cause there so many bugs and I dont like the server feeling on singleplayer
GRRR! I went on my ssp world and my enchantments were gone and then I switched back to the previous snapshot and everything was gone. ****!Now I have to invedit everything that was in my inv ;(
Can someone help me please, I've been trying to look how to get my brother to play with me but everything I've seen says i need a IP How do i get a Ip? please help
there should be some way to turn off the SP server function so that you can still play if your internet is down
Unless your operating system TCP/IP stack is broken for some reason (like a bad network card or something else broken on your computer) there should be no reason for you to have a problem playing in single person mode. You can still play on your worlds on your own computer with this change even if you yank the network cable out from the back of your computer or turn off wireless routers or anything else that connects you to the rest of the internet.
Your concern, why something logical to ask if you don't understand how local host servers work, is unfounded and not something to worry about.
I'll try to say this as clearly as I can. The purpose of merging SSP with SMP is not to add a feature where your friend can play with you from time to time in your "local" or "single player" worlds. That is merely a side effect that is perhaps useful for many players.
Instead, the purpose of this is to simplify game development so Jeb and his crew doesn't need to keep updating two version of Minecraft every time they update the game. ...
I know that. I was responding to someone who said that "The sooner cracked clients are rendered useless, the better".
You cannot tell a "cracked client" apart from someone with no network connection, or someone who is not using the official launcher. The official launcher takes your name and password, computes a hash that changes every time, validates you with mojang, etc.; and then runs the client as a sub-process (applet). That subprocess sends the hash to servers when you log in.
If I have no internet connection (local lan, for example), I cannot compute a new hash.
If I'm using a shell script to run the client, instead of the official launcher (allows me to hit ctrl-Z to stop it and let the fan cool my computer, or otherwise stop consuming resources if my system is active), then I cannot compute a new hash every time -- and asking magic launcher to run login code and then expose it in the ps list is the only way I can fetch the always changing password -- does not always work.

1. I've got a server that I play with a friend. But my ISP is really bad -- about 20-30% of the time I have no internet connection. So by setting my system to be an offline server, I can play on the same world solo even when I don't have an internet connection.

this local miltiplayer thing is STUPID!!! these idiots managed to bring smp glitchiness to single player. Now, if you play offline, you will lose you invintory of your online character, defeating the point of playing MC on a laptop, or offline in general. Because of this, this is my least favorite snapshot, and the only one in which they made minecraft worse.

I fail to see how this is a complaint about the current snapshot (or this particular snapshot that is the focus of this thread). I can understand how computers can get overheated and that you may need to do some special things to get software like Minecraft working on a particular computer. The easy response here would be "it sucks to be you", but I really can understand your frustration.
This said, I support Mojang with their efforts to make sure those who are playing Minecraft have in fact paid for the game. If you can come up with some alternative system for how somebody with your situation can be able to play the game, I'm quite certain that Mojang would be interested in hearing about it. Give a reasonable example beyond your particular situation where your "fix" could be beneficial for other players as well and try to guess how many other players would benefit from your suggested change. It sounds like you have some technical expertise on the issue, so you ought to be able to provide some specifics for Mojang.
If your solution is to tell Mojang to get rid of the check for cracked clients, I don't think they will listen. If you can't play single player without a network connection, I think that would be legitimately a bug and should be reported as such... and something I would think impacts a great many players. Minecraft 1.2.5 works without a network connection as long as you have logged in at least one time, so to expect similar behavior for version 1.3 and later versions is reasonable. Are you reporting that as a known bug for this snapshot?

I'm talking about the stand-alone server and the line in "server.properties" that says "texture-pack="
i've tried putting in and putting in a texture pack named PP.zip (the painterly pack).
when i log in with the client, it asks if it should download it, then it tries, but stays stuck on 0%.
Edit: I've tried using just terrain.png and some other things, but those didn't even try to download - only the .zip file has partially worked so far.

I know. That totally sucks that you didn't back up your stuff before installing the experimental software on your computer.

I can play Singleplayer just fine, just keep trying to login to your world, or make a new world.

I have 2 .minecraft files, the original and one for mods, I haven't beta tested because I am too lazy to make a third one.

Do you need to download both files for the snapshot?
I really want to get it and it is my first snapshot I'm going to download.
