I like the amount of people here who think they have something to proove, and try to post ludacrisly long comments stating how everyone is wrong in all their assumptions, when they themselves could be just as wrong. I find this fact rather humourous.
Oh, and in answer to your question, no, I don't think ill of the Mojang team and Minecraft developers. They've made an amazing game, with many brilliant features and possibilities, but I just think they are making a mistake with this local server thing to replace single player... Needing to be able to connect to your own worlds, and having many SMP-only problems in SSP is not a good thing. Even when they push it through to an actual release, it will still have these problems (or at least similar ones), because they exist currently in normal SMP, and you cannot deny that fact.
PS- If you didn't get the irony in me saying things like "I find this fact rather humourous", please do NOT try to use it as ammunition for you pointless rant-like response.
Actually, I find it as a great idea. That means that those SMP bugs will be fixed sooner since they aren't maintaining two versions of code. And I barely call it connecting.
I will say that they need to change the timeout variables. Sometimes the server isn't fully started (Especially when making new maps)
I see so many comments hating on the local server implementation, but quite recently, I saw comments begging for something along the lines of "something like in Pocket Edition, where you can invite people to play on your singleplayer world." I love how people ask for something then complain the second there's a little fault in it. First of all, beggars can't be choosers, be glad you got what was asked for. And second, It's not even a full release, they do snapshots for a reason - to allow us to point out the bugs for them to fix. But then when there's a snapshot with bugfixes, there's still at least one person who has to say "When will they actually add content?" Would you rather have an extremely buggy game that's barely playable due to the sheer amounts of bugs, or a streamlined/polished game that you can play without having to worry about something not working properly. The amounts of irony I see in forumspeople these days is unbelievable. Why don't you just appreciate what you have instead of whining like a small child because of something that's not even supposed to be perfect.
And what happens if you have a whole bunch of mods installed and the other person doesnt?
Can the other people see the mods too even if they dont have it?
Presumably a crash at the moment. With mcAPI, mods will be handled better.
To everyone who's complaining that the new architecture of "SSP is really just local SMP and it brings all the SMP bugs to my precious!":
Here's a tip from a 20-year veteran of software development.
Moving to this architecture will DECREASE bugs and INCREASE stability on both SSP and SMP.
Read that again.
You see, maintaining two separate and diverging code bases with a bunch of overlapping functionality gives, at minimum, twice the chance for bugs to be introduced, and requires fixing common bugs in two places instead of one.
Don't like the mobs glitching into walls in SMP, so you play SSP? Great - that bug will get squashed sooner in a unified codebase.
That's the way it works, and it's the best architectural change they could make at this point, in my professional opinion AND as a user of their product. Feel free to continue to rage against the machine if you like.
I'm not sure I understand people's logic when they say that this will introduce lag in single player games. If both the server and client are running on the same machine there should be zero lag. Even if they are on two separate machines on the same lan there should be no lag. Think before you speak people. Not convinced? Open a command window and type: ping localhost and see what the response time is.
What they're thinking of is that the server uses RAM and computing power. However, with SP and MP being merged, the "server" will be only a very basic framework, with most of the servering stuff being handled dynamically by the "client" of the host. Presumably. Jeb and the Bukkit devs know what they're doing.
SSP broken. YOu need a server jar just to play SSP and it lags like fk...
Jeb wants to get rid of Singleplayer. BAD IDEA... This could be the death of minecraft if people cannot play off line or play single w/o a server file!!! What was he smoking????? WTF do you need a server jar for single player for.
Battlefield comes with server files, even though it can be played in singleplayer offline.
LOL, this sounded like a good idea, but it was implemented horribly.
Now it's gonna be impossible to play Minecraft for me, unless some serious bug fixing happens.
I see this as being a very very bad move, forcing people to be online just to play single player? I think not.
What if we lose net due to a storm or something and want to play minecraft? we can't cause what they want happen is 1.3 single player to act as a server. And if that happens I see allot of people quiting and stop playing minecraft until they remove the single player server aspect. Cause if not I for one will leave the game and never return.
Cause to me if they add server side single player, they have made a very bad decision and will remain on the bottom list of bad games.
How is this forcing people to be online for singleplayer?
My old laptop is the only computer I can play Minecraft on.
I either have to get a new computer (which I can't due to monetary issues) or run 1.2.5 for the foreseeable future.
Sigh.
I don't follow your logic. The system requirements aren't changing.
I do not like what they have done to the single player worlds. I think you should be able to start a single player world normally, meaning only you, and then down the road switch the world to allow friends on. Or put in the option to create a TRUE single player world or create a single player server world thing that they now have created.
Yes he is, and yes he will be. An always online game, is a terrible idea. I don't want to be REQUIRED to play online just to play Minecraft.. I DO NOT WANT my single player invaded by Server BS. Keep server garbage to multiplayer. leave single player, just that.. single player.. If I wanted a server.. I'd get one.
Why? Having the server files in the client make for a nice, convenient package. If you don't like having a server, don't enable it when 1.3 comes out. Oh, and evidently you do want a server, considering you downloaded the server-client test snapshot.
Don't talk to me like I'm a ****ing retard. I save multiple backups of everything, I don't just have 1 .minecraft which I mod the **** out of and update to snapshots whenevr. I havn't ruined anything in my worlds, the reason it's ruined, is because this (when implemented) will make it so HARDLY ANY mods work, as they will need to be MP compatible and that just isn't possible with some things. It also bugs out connection to worlds, which shouldn't be needed on SINGLE PLAYER.
All mods and plugins will need to be rewritten for mcAPI. This was announced over two months ago.
Combining singleplayer with multiplayer was a BIG MISTAKE. I can't even log in to server in singleplayer. It either times out or connection refuses. When I do connect, it is extremely laggy and I only get about 20fps. When I hit a mob or a mob hits me, my frames drop down to 0-5.
You're also either an illiterate dumbass or an ignorant one.
I will admit this would be a great move if the game was less developed but to do it at such a late stage is stupid.
Im curious as to how does this work for server hosting providers. Will there be a server.exe still for them to run or does that mean that i need a second minecraft account for the server to run it?
There probably will still be a server.jar available (why would a hosting provider use Windows servers?)
Don't be a ****ing retard. That's a stupid thing to assume from what I said. This WHOLE IDEA is stupid and buggy as hell, I don't care if it's just a snapshot, it's not going to be any betetr as an actual feature.
I like the amount of people here who think they have something to proove, and try to post ludacrisly long comments stating how everyone is wrong in all their assumptions, when they themselves could be just as wrong. I find this fact rather humourous.

Notice how once the Bukkit devs were hired, a lot of SMP problems (notably the TNT shadows) were fixed? With the SMP code and the SSP code being merged into a single codebase, other bugs will be fixed.
I mean, this may sound stupid, but how do i back up every file?
Copy the .minecraft folder?
There's funnily enough, only 1 folder you have to back up, 2 if you want to be extra cautious.
#1 folder to back up is your...... 'saves' folder. That's the one that contains your worlds.
If you really want to, you can always back up the 'bin' folder too, but it isn't necessary, since when you open the launcher you can just click on 'options' and then 'force update' to have it fix up that one.
When i installed the client and server files, i compressed it as a .zip file, changed it to .jar, load, deny update request (for 1.2.5), and it's stuck at 95%! Do I need to wait longer or re-install? I need help basically. D:
To get past that problem I had to open up command prompt,
CD %appdata%/.minecraft/server
java -jar minecraft_server.jar
And start a localhost that the singleplayer client isn't even connecting to apparently (I didn't see myself connect to it in the window).
Anyone know about all that craziness?
And to get the server/minecraft_server.jar it's the one that comes in the zip folder, and that's where the game tells you to put it if it's not there.
I don't know if I like this idea with the multiplayer singleplayer, what about mods? we can't use singleplayer mods ever again :/ I might just stay on 1.2.5.
With any luck, yes. The sooner the cracked clients are rendered useless the better.
I'm sorry, what?
Lets step back one moment: Offline servers let people play without talking to Mojang, to verify them.
Alright. Lets look at me and my own system:
1. I've got a server that I play with a friend. But my ISP is really bad -- about 20-30% of the time I have no internet connection. So by setting my system to be an offline server, I can play on the same world solo even when I don't have an internet connection. Forcing me to validate myself each time I want to play would mean that I can no longer play without an internet connection. (Remember: Attempting to move a world from multiplayer to singleplayer means your "player" information is lost and you restart at spawn with no items and no experience).
2. I can also log my PPC G4 Mac in, as "PackMule". With Optifine, it can run a local single player game just fine -- but multiplayer is as bad (or worse) as no optifine. (Something about less than 20 FPS resulting in major issues ...). But as a slow, dumb mobile storage space, that cannot defend itself, that is constantly lagging behind us as we move through the dark tunnels? Works just fine.
Now, you might say that #2 -- running a second copy of the client on an adjacent machine -- is pushing the limits of the license. Fine.
But what about case #1? Are you going to say that I can no longer play without an internet connection just because I want my friend to play with me at times?
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
But what about case #1? Are you going to say that I can no longer play without an internet connection just because I want my friend to play with me at times?
I'll try to say this as clearly as I can. The purpose of merging SSP with SMP is not to add a feature where your friend can play with you from time to time in your "local" or "single player" worlds. That is merely a side effect that is perhaps useful for many players.
Instead, the purpose of this is to simplify game development so Jeb and his crew doesn't need to keep updating two version of Minecraft every time they update the game. At the moment they need to update both multi-player and single player versions of Minecraft, which is one of the reasons why there are some bugs which only happen in the multi-player environment and others only for single-player. Once this is completed, there will no longer be special or unique bugs depending if you are playing SSP or SMP... they will be one and the same.
If you drop an internet connection from time to time and can't connect to your local world, that is a bug that needs to be reported. It shouldn't be happening. Keep in mind this particular snapshot is supposed to have bug, and if you are having difficulty right now that is to be expected. Please report those bugs and let Mojang know that you are having problems, but don't go ripping off Jeb's head because you can't play your favorite game at the moment with this snapshot. Save that for when this becomes a formal update... something that will happen this summer or even not until autumn of this year.
Another thing I've noticed, this has mad single player nearly impossible for people who have never set up a server. You now will need knowledge of servers and server hosting to play single player. Which is a bit unfair on the younger half of Minecraft players, and some of the oldwer ones who know nothing of all this server stuff...
You shouldn't need to "set up a server". There will be some default options that you may want to change, and if you are into server management or want to step into that arena there will be all of the server commands and options available for you... including server-side mods.
But for all of those who are somewhat computer illiterate and unsure of themselves in terms of server management, they won't have to do a single bloody thing. This is a blatant falsehood and misrepresentation of what Jeb and his team is doing with the game. You will not need to know a thing about server management or how to do anything other than simply installing Minecraft on your computer. Since you are posting here, I presume you have already accomplished that step. The server side setup will be done "automagically" as a part of the installation process of putting Minecraft onto your computer. If you can play Minecraft today with version 1.2.5, you will be able to play Minecraft 1.3 and later versions with this combined SSP and SMP.
When i installed the client and server files, i compressed it as a .zip file, changed it to .jar, load, deny update request (for 1.2.5), and it's stuck at 95%! Do I need to wait longer or re-install? I need help basically. D:
So about the lag thing. Before the update I was getting about 50 fps, now I'm getting 160. It seemed to improve for me, like several people have suggested it would.
So about the lag thing. Before the update I was getting about 50 fps, now I'm getting 160. It seemed to improve for me, like several people have suggested it would.
That was the one thing I was REALLY worried about. I play on my laptop, and I was afraid of lag being an issue. If your experience is common, then this will be only a good thing!

No. At the moment, it's vanilla server code, and eventually will have mcAPI, the new, upcoming Craftbukkit, attached.
