This is a horrible snapshot. There is nothing positive about this, and the way you're going about this "merging" thing is way to unstable. I mean, you broke the ENTIRE FREAKING GAME. HOW, my kind friends, do you BREAK the game you've coded for years because you made it multiplayer-only? I mean, now we need a constant internet connection to play the game on SINGLE PLAYER.
Oh wow, I tried reading all of it but just got sick of the "OMG SINGLE PLAYER IS NOT SINGLE PLAYER CHANGE IT BACK" or "THIS IS GOING TO RUIN SMP"
To the first quote: This is experimental, these snapshots are designed so people can quickly find all the bugs and get ready for new features, the ssp server feature is brilliant and i'm 100% sure they will make it able to play offline aswell as online.
NB: I also find it quite funny that I know the majority of people flipping out about this aren't running the true game and are using cracked clients hehe
To the second: People have been able to host server from there own computers forever but that has never stopped server hosts. This is because server hosts offer extremely high data speed and usually higher amount of RAM with the advantage that the server is 24/7. Also this server ssp is for use over LAN networks so basically it means we can invite people around and have LAN parties for minecraft which is f*cking boss!
Wow people are crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if most people don't even understand what the server/client changes actually mean and yet they hate it anyway. While there might be a lot of issues right now (it is a snapshot after all) in the long run we'll be much better off. Updates and bug fixes will be much easier with one code path. Also you won't get situations where you have a bug in SMP but not SSP or the other way around. The end result is a much more stable product that is easier to roll out bug fixes and add new features. Also, I would imagine the whole client server single-player bit will be completely transparent to the user when this is all over. Give it time people.
Honestly, if you don't understand the significance of this architecture change then keep playing 1.2.5 and stop complaining about things you do not know anything about.
What you fail to understand is, with your ports open, ANYONE can access your network. WIth EASE. You can't just go, OH stay open just for minecraft.. when it is open.. it is open to anyone and everyone. Anyone can get your network and use it as a mirror for whatever, among many other things. Using open ports, or port forwards, is dangerous. Simply put.
If' you've a decent software firewall it's not dangerous at all. One of the comps on my LAN has several ports forwarded to it. Each one is for a specific server (mail server, web server, and a few others). I have rules set up in the firewall that for each port, ONLY the server associated with it is allowed to connect to the outside world. ALL other programs are blocked by default.
Check the documentation in your software firewall for details how to do this.
Don't have a software firewall (as in relying only on the built in firewall on your router)... for shame
Anyone who does not like this update. Does not understand what its really supposed to do. when its DONE people can't just join your world when ever they want. you would have it invite them and THEN they could join other wise its a normal single player world. and most likely, when its done, its not going to run the server when you start a world. as for people complaining about coco beans being obtainable.. come on really?
I asked this at the beginning of this thread and have not seen anything that answers my questions about this snapshot.
I currently run 3 PC lan at home, one is used as a minecraft server and currently has the minecraft_server.jar file and no minecraft.jar (ie server runs but no client) the 2 other PC's have minecraft.jar (client) and 2 people also connect over the internet, they also only run client.
With this update will I need to have a full minecraft updated client/server running on all 5 computers, meaning the purchase of another licence, so that I can maintain a separate server.

You're an idiot, and assume far too much. I paid for my game, and under this snapshot I could not run singleplayer. So would you like to tell me more about how think people are running cracked clients when you don't know anything at all? Also, again, it isn't true single player anymore since you cannot pause the game in progress as you could before, it's running like a server.. which makes it multiplayer. So until you learn some more things.. keep quiet.
Here's a big problem for you: SSP MODS WILL NOT WORK IF ALL SINGLEPLAYER MAPS ARE TURNED INTO SERVERS! And yet they are trying to make modding easier with this new API.
1 step forward, 2 steps back...
This.. is the other reason why a server based 'so called single player' is terrible.

Once all the code is split mods should only need to be applied to the server portion. This means mod makers don't need to make a SSP and SMP version or have problems with one or the other. I don't see how that's a step backwards Yes things might be broken now, but in the long run things will be much easier on the modders. I would assume the new API will come out once the client/server changes are made.
Great. When the new version gets released, I will take a final look at my worlds, because with this feature people I don't know will join my SINGLEPLAYER worlds and wreck them. Ah, Minecraft is no longer Minecraft. When will Mojang learn to not distract people from their games? At least make it so that if you don't add the additional server file it doesn't convert your normal peaceful worlds to mulitplayer servers. Else, Minecraft might lose one of its fans...
What makes you think that Mojang is going to add code to Minecraft to take your public IP address, post it to some central repository of active copies of Minecraft that's available to the public at large, open all the proper ports on your router, and then let random people you don't know join your singleplayer world and wreck it?
That doesn't make any sense, no one at Mojang has suggested anything even remotely close to that happening, and it's technically unfeasible.
Everyone: please don't set your hair on fire over this. It's a snapshot with the first pass at an architectural change that WILL NOT FORCE YOU TO CHANGE YOUR GAMEPLAY STYLE ONCE IT IS READY FOR FULL RELEASE.
If it's causing you nightmares, cold sweats, pancreatic swelling, or blurred vision, then for the love of all that's holy, stop playing the snapshot and go back to 1.2.5 until 1.3.0 is released and the feature set is complete.
I like this snapshot, I am abil to play with much more stabilitie in the FPS area and i can play on Normal render distance instead of small.
my laptop approves this snapshot lol ^.^
~~~EDIT~~~
Optifine does not even give me the abilitie to play on normal render distance, only small+16.
OK let me get this straight. So Mojang is trying to make it so that they don't have to impliment things twice, and to do that they have to make singleplayer NOT be singleplayer anymore? And if its a local server, when your playing alone you still get the multiplayer lag? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?????
This is a buggy snapshot, not the final version. I am sure that you will be given the choice to disallow other people to join your worlds if you don't want.
No. I tried it on minecraft 1.2.5, if you run a local server and log in it, you have no lag.
Does not take away the fact that there is still server code, and you cannot pause it, it is still essentially a stupid server instead of solid single player only mode.
I have been running a multiplayer server for single player for mostly single player use for a couple of months now. This is mainly so my family can collaborate in the same world. What I found though is everyone wanted their own server as well. It seems walking away from spawn.to another part of the world is not as good as having your own world spawn!
On the 'pause' problem... My kids jump out of the game (hit escape, quit) and all the logic about mobs and distance from player is honoured. Mobs despawn if no one is around.
What it does mean is city life continues when people pop in from time to time. The wheat grows. The sheep graze and get eaten by wolves. Pigs... do something I guess.
Port conflicts between existing server and the snapshot server are fixed by setting a listener port.
This isn't the end of the world. It is the start of a few million new ones!
