I need some clarification on this update. I run a server through a hosting site because my dad is paranoid at the thought of me running a server on the computer. He's paranoid because he doesn't want hackers doing **** to my computer. Whether or not this paranoia is justified or not, there's not a chance my dad would let me run my server through my own computer/internet connection.
Will the ability to run a server through a hosting website be taken away if single player maps become toggle-able to multiplayer?
2. I don't want to run a server on my computer. When I play Single Player, I don't want the option to play with other people. If I did, I'd just log onto a server. If it becomes possible for someone to connect to my single player maps without my permission through my IP adress, I will not update Minecraft past 1.2.5.
I know that it's a problem for Mojang to have to program the same additions of a game to SMP and single player but it could be a huge problem if the two were simply merged.
To answer question 2, random people won't be able to come in off the street and connect to your single player world, the way i understand it, is that it will work exactly like the pocket edition, you have to invite them in. If you don't invite them in, then it is just a single player world.
Whatever, I still have my game port forwarded, and I am very happy being able to play on my server with friends without hamachi. Your not gonna get a hax0r Ddos worm attack by opening ports to minecraft, thats just being a paranoid noob.
Port forwarding really isn't that hard, I found out my ports were correctly forwarded, I just hadn't allowed minecraft through windows firewall.
I don't know why I had to do that, I never had before, I am lucky I am in an IT college class, or I probably never would have known to do that.
What you fail to understand is, with your ports open, ANYONE can access your network. WIth EASE. You can't just go, OH stay open just for minecraft.. when it is open.. it is open to anyone and everyone. Anyone can get your network and use it as a mirror for whatever, among many other things. Using open ports, or port forwards, is dangerous. Simply put.
A hell of a lot of people here need serious work on their reading comprehension skills - and by that I mean they need to develop reading comprehension skills.

Alright. Prove it.
When forwarding ports to your computer it is very exact and safe.
As long as you don't allow ALL connections, you are fine.
My computer allows minecraft access.
If your issue is with people coming on your single player and griefing you, then whitelist it, or don't port forward, as you seem pretty paranoid about it.
As my computer is right now, nobody can just go access my registry files or watch my browsing through my minecraft access.

You have any idea how unsecure your network is when you have it port forwarded? Among other risks you take doing that crap? smh..
I hope jeb the idiot, realizes how bad things are messed up with this idea of his, and pulls the plug on it..
Maybe you'll realize that this is an idea to test, and a long ways away to being complete or even incorporated into the game. It might get scrapped later. Instead of just trashing an idea immediately, how about you wait until things develop and see what happens.
I won't be playing this snapshot unless I want to test for bugs and all that. Reason why is A ) Enchantments are broken and B ) Repairing is broken. Those two things I do all the time.
I don't know what you people are getting high on, but no where does it say anything about single player mode being done away with. You will have the OPTION, read it, it's English, OPTION... to let people join your single player game. Go back to kindergarten and learn how to read. If you don't know what the definition of OPTION is, consult your local dictionary, assuming you've retained how to READ.
Really? That sucks. Also, to address this server problem, I'd say people need to stop complaining. It is a snapshot. Mojang is just experimenting. What's wrong with that? If people want to try it out then go ahead. Don't like it? Don't use it. I'm sure they will take care of the feature and make it and on/off thing. Now if they put this in the vanilla version without fixing the server/SSP issue then that is something to be upset over.

When server garbage is intergrated into Single Player, and is pretty much server ready, then yes.. it's not true single player, it's now an Always Online crapfest. When server issues are affecting SIngle Player things... it's no longer Single Player. It's online multiplayer with no one else logged in.
@the other guy saying prove it.. - Sorry, I don't hack, so I won't be proving it. But trust me, It can be done. All someone needs to do, is connect to your port, then they have kinds of backdoor access that way.
Sorry, not saying anything about you or anybody else. Your statement just made me think of it.
I actually laughed outloud to that just now. I get where you're going with it, and yes.. it is funny. But when it comes to my SP worlds, I like it to be far from the internet as possible. I like playing it when fully disconnected from online, I don't keep my internet on all the time, and this snapshot wasn't allowing me to do that

Agreed, though it is annoying when it won't let me to connect and I have to keep retrying. It's a cool audition to be able to host a LAN server, I wonder if it's possible to combine a actual Public IP server (after port-forwarding of course) to single player.
I think a lot of people just don't understand how things work. Not to be condescending or putting people down, programming and computer networking can be confusing and difficult to understand. I think this has led to a lot of the poor responses here.
To oversimplify a bit...
Minecraft (1.2.5 and earlier) is already a server and client all in one. The 'client' being the graphical front end that you see and interact with and the 'server' being the part that controls things like mob AI, world generation, time progression, etc. Seperating the two parts into seperate entities is not going to strain a computer any more than it currently is in 1.2.5 as the two halves are doing little more than they were before as a combined entity.
A minecraft server isn't as resource intensive as the 1.2.5 client (AKA single player minecraft) as it lacks all the graphical elements required to play the game (when running with a single person connected), and slimming the client down to just it's graphical front end it will also be less resource intensive as the 1.2.5 client. Running both at once should be roughly comparable to 1.2.5 in terms of system resources when running just a single player.
As for SMP bugs now being in single player, it's hard to say yet if that will happen. It doesn't sound like they're using the existing server.jar for the starting point for the new server half so the existing SMP bugs and glitches may be averted entirely.
For those who think this will be like exposing your private single player map for the world to abuse...
Unless your computer's firewall and home network are configured to allow outside access in already, it is very difficult to accidentally enable outsiders the ability to connect to a server you've set up on your computer. I would also assume that Jeb and the rest will make some very clear menu options for allowing/disabling outside connections (or by your invitation only).
Lastly, the snapshots are just that, a snapshot of the code as-is, mid-development, with no guarantees or promises beyond that the compiler didn't choke on it. If you ran it with your main world (or any world, for that matter) without first at least making a backup you deserve what happens to your world. It's like using a power tool halfway through repairs being made and all covers and safety guards aren't put back on yet.
I find the SMP and SSP combining sorta cool. In 1.2.5 in jungle biomes my fps is 1-3 and with this snapshot in jungle biomes i get 20-30 fps. Also, repairing items and enchanting isn't a problem for me since i was one of the people who played in BETA and don't use them allot. As for the nether being broken in the snapshot, it's a bug so it will be fixed for 1.3 Anyone that says offline mode isn't possible then don't use the snapshot, or whitelist. Anyway if people think this snapshot was a bad idea and want the LAN thing removed, grow up. This might not be added and if it is, don't play. You bought the game and it's like other games you buy, if you don't like the game you don't play it again, and when you play it again (like me with minecraft) you find it better then when you last played it. If you want, you can stay on 1.2.5 until the single player server add on is gone, if it ever will be. Nothing is sure for what is added in 1.3, they might add this or not. You choose if you play or not.
Also sorry about going on about this, I've just seen people saying this was stupid.
Security exploit criminals are always looking for open ports they can abuse to get arbitrary code running on someone's machine. What I would like to know is if this snapshot has been tested and built so that no arbitrary code exploits can get through to someone's machine. If this snapshot is not secure against such attacks I will not be downloading it or testing it.
Personally speaking, I want proof that it can or cannot be abused, not raging discussion on theories that may not even exist in this snapshot.
if someone can say positively that this snapshot is safe to use, cannot be abused by hackers to get arbitrary code running on someone's machine, and has been tested to ensure such is the case, I may finally download and test it. Until then I'm sticking with what I know.
I really REALLY hate this whole server thing for single player... Single player worlds now have connection problems, that block placing glitch if you're too close, more lagg, and a few other bugs. Single player needs to remain SINGLE PLAYER!
I CANT CONNECT TO MY SINGLE PLAYER WORLDS!!! WHY THE HELL SHOULD I NEED TO CONNECT!?!?!?
Few bugs me and a few friends noticed: Door sound is broken, Enchantment Tables do not work, playing on single player worlds now has connection problems (even though you are just loading the map staright from the saves directory) & Nether Portals are broken.
At least they fixed that weird volume glitch and the slabs. Although I personally think we need more than just slabs of this new wood, stairs, fences, you name it, we need it! Also, all be it unrelated, ADD LANTERNS WHICH CAN BE HUNG FROM UNDER A BLOCK! Lol.
Also, all worlds convert to Survival automatically.
