Guys stop complaining about "no survival!" It's not like Minecraft will be absolutely no survival, I think Jeb means that it will change some things in survival. One of those examples are like more food and combat mechanics! The next update won't wipe out survival completely, it's most likely going to be like the 1.5 ladder fix, where the developers will even out the "no survival" concept!
Look at the bright side! There will be new biomes, mobs, and other aesthetically pleasing changes! (Like arrows that stick to mobs!)
Worst case scenario, the new update will change a lot stuff we loved in the game, like direct food healing.
I'm not worried about the food meter, a recent screen (the one that showed new meat) also showed that food can now be stacked. I'm surprised no one mentioned it. It'll be easy to carry a day or two worth of food and do a little hunting while you are out for the rest. Depending on how much you can stack (I'm guessing 8 or 16) and how much a piece of food regenerates your hunger, a stack may be enough for several days.
The issue that bothers me is the loss of survival mode. Regardless of what Notch originally intended Minecraft to become, or what he wishes it to become in the future, the player base sees it as a game of Survival and a way of expressing themselves artistically. The eventual return of Creative Mode (through the use of the difficulty system) will facilitate the latter, but if 1.8 will get rid of Survival...

The reason is they don't want you to be able to move a mobspawner if you find it to make a really good mob trap, so they stopped that by preventing pistons from moving anything with item data, such as tnt, a furace, a chest, or a mob trap
because if they move chests, everything inside of the chest is an entity. and there are an infinite amount of possibilities. If you move the chest, you move the entities and notch would have to script every single one. So it just isn't worth it.
They are re-naming Survival to Adventure, so there still will be survival, but just under a different name and Adventure mode will have lots more features.
The question is why rename it ?
I would still prefer it be called Survival. Survival gives the game an overall objective which is one thing seems to be lacking in SMP. however the name is not important in comparison to overall experience.

And anyway, adventure is way better than survival, which actually has no reason to exist because the only uses it has is to try stuff and unlock achievements but it has no real reason to be played since there are no goals on it except for surviving which is way too easy.
I wonder what exactly is meant by Survival not existing... And what would one gain by leveling up? More health? Maybe Crafting recipes, or the ability to craft more stuff! I sure hope they make dungeons more common, though... I have yet to find a single one without a special seed or map.
And I prefer not to comment on Endermen... *shiver*
I hope that NPC villages will be like multiplayer where you attack and heal and then the NPC's attack and heal. I want taking over NPC villages a challenge!
