From underground, dig a tunnel directly above you and place ladders - when you place the last ladder with a solid surface above, the lighting gets messed up every time (dark shadow).
several people have asked why anyone would want more mining.
because some of us couldn't care less about hostile mobs and potions and enchantments. because we like to craft things and build interesting contraptions. minecraft's tech tree is rudimentary. have a look at the "better than wolves" mod if you can't imagine anything more than these few ores and tools. it has gearboxes, axles and hoppers (funnels stuff into chests), saws which cut planks into smaller pieces, water wheels and windmills, hemp for fabric and rope, pottery ...
and wolf poop.
that's the sort of thing some of us want more of. and no, having it in a mod isn't just as good. if it's in a mod we're dependent on the mod's developer to update it with every new release of minecraft, or heck, keep it up at all. and if we're particularly unlucky, the mod won't be compatible with anything else. that's why expanding the tech tree in minecraft itself is important to us. that's why the builders among us are ridiculously pleased with upside down stairs -- i know it seems funny, but it matters because we don't all play the game alike.
that's why minecraft is such a popular game, you know? because one can play it in a lot of different ways, and it won't become boring nearly as quickly as most other games.
so yeah, i am happy with upside down stairs, and i think the iron golem and its nod to laputa is cool even if it is ugly, i think the AI is getting better and better, and i can see that the code is becoming more easily extensible, which bodes well for future additions. thanks, mojang. i don't think i've ever before got this much play value out of a game. and i love these weekly snapshots that allow me an early glimpse of the next release.
PS: if you think you have found a bug, go here and see whether it's already reported, and if not, add it.
BUG: Golems can't jump, so in towns that are mulitple levels or have water by them they get stuck on the lower tiers and never can get back up. I had a few Golems go down a couple of levels into water, and never get back up before drownings, and other just standing at a one block high ledge unable to get up and save the village, Should be fixed, or else golems are freakin useless as defenders in most randomly made towns. =P Still, cool idea.
My poor villagers...they didn't survive long enough to make it to the repopulation and golem snapshots T_T Now I'll have a lonely golem wandering forlornly amongst the abandoned ruins of a ghost town...
Ah well, might populate it with Ocelots or something >.> At least I know it'll be a creeper-free zone. xD

Next time fence the place of, so the golems will not wander away and keep the place well lit so sieges will not happen. Also, the golem requires at least one villager in the village to spawn.
I kept it as well lit as I could but didn't fence it off because I didn't realize how many villagers were getting killed. I was down to one before the reproduction snapshot came out and he disappeared shortly before the golem Snapshot came out ^^;

Lighting bug:

Same thing happened to me
