Also, to everyone who's getting so upset about magic, it's completely optional, just like playing the game. If you don't like doing those, no one's forcing you to do them. As for Minecraft losing it's identity, or shifting the focus on magic, I'd like to point out that ridiculously cool electricity was in the game LONG before magic was even mentioned. I think the basic idea about Minecraft is to have a neat but simple world with not much personality, until you sort of "make it your own." I really like how you're struggling to survive, while planning to make things, and eventually you have a world exactly the way you want it. Maybe not everybody does that, but adding optional features like magic will definitely allow more people to make their own sort of world, so I like it.
We've got the undead that just sprout out of the ground every night just... because (and the skeletons come complete with bow/arrows). Creepers are like exploding, mobile plants. Endermen can warp all over the place, and using their pearls, you can, too. You can build portals into ANOTHER WORLD, and you dont do so with Science!, you do so by lighting obsidian on fire, which works because WHY NOT. And then you go in there and do battle with Ghasts, giant flying.... THINGS.... that shoot fire at you. And zombie pigmen, which can occur in the overworld as well if a pig gets hit by lightning.
I could go on and on here.
Minecraft is NOT supposed to be a realistic world, it's supposed to be a FUN one. That's it, that's ALL.
Not liking a feature because they are calling it "magic" is *REALLY* damn stupid.
And I've seen this kind of idiocy before: If they had named it, just NAMED it, something OTHER than magic, most of the complaints about this would evaporate, PROVING how damn STUPID the complaints are to begin with.
Also, "lame-ass magic bs" sounds like someone trying to sound cool when they arent. Ugh. I hear 10-year-olds speak that way fairly often.
If you dont like the system, whatever. Dont use it. Nobody will care. But the *only* thing you're accomplishing is missing out on a set of in-game effects that may actually prove useful and entertaining because the devs called it "magic".
Had they called it "Call of Duty guns in potion form", you'd have JUMPED on it.
The "undead" can be explained thusly:
Zombies - Other miners that were somehow infected with something.
Skeletons - Skeletons from said miners that have been gathered and robotically animated.
Creepers - Single purpose robots or artificial life.
Spiders - Just giant spiders really. It doesn't need an explanation.
Endermen - More artificial life, these equipped for entanglement based teleportation.
Slimes - Biomimetic gel.
Ghasts - Balloon like life inflated with low pressure air allowing them to fly.
Zombie Pigmen - Pigmen that came to the Nether in search of gold, but found only leprosy.
The spawning is a necessary game mechanic, it can't really be avoided in a sandbox game.
Pigs becoming zombie pigmen is inexplicable, but too funny to complain about.
Portals can be explained if you've played Half Life. Their construction is a result of keeping the game simple. It wouldn't be much fun laying advanced redstone and crafting teleport pads to go to the Nether.
Magic that serves no purpose other than being magical isn't necessarily bad, but it is extremely irritating if it's not bizarre and original.
Also, it is just offensive and uncalled for to bring up Call of Duty in the forums for a game that's actually fun.

Hey, anybody else notice that the Enchantment table has Ender Pearls in the corners? Seems like the recipe will be something like four Ender Pearls in the corners, a book in the center, and Cobblestone in the remaining four spaces. Sound about right?
Minecraft is starting to look a little bit more like some kind of RPG, which is nice but I think it gets rid of some of the uniqueness Minecraft has had, which made it start getting "very" popular in the first place. The potions and enchantments makes it seem less of a unique gaming genre and too much like an RPG.
for all of you people wondering if this will come out in 1.9 or 1.10, it is most likely gonna be in 1.9. I mean, why wud they put something down like a month ahead of time...it is just stupid.

I absolutely would not have jumped right in. The idea is dumb, it's over complicating the game, because me being the 10 year adult I am likes a simplistic game.
Jeb did say that cauldrons are still in the game, but that they dont do anything other then hold water at the moment so... they could hold your potions brews in thier like a chest for potions.
Awww. Cauldron would have been pretty sweet. Will be interesting to see if there's a possibility of developing your own enchantments/enhancements for your weapons, armor and tools.

CocolockoHow you know that?

1.10=2.0, when you add .1 to 1.9, you get 2, not 1.1

Choose your path wisely.
So what next Endoman Scrolls.
Like any addition, these should be player driven. If you want to craft stuff then have it like all other crafting systems, make sense!
Someone also mentioned a Forge bench, now that makes sense. If you're going to add stuff Notch at least think a bit about it before you add it!
