This. Right here. I believe it would fit in MUCH better this way then summoning up some magic spell and enchanting my tools. Magic? Ick. Minecraft used to be a stand-alone game. Nothing like it. Now its becoming a lame run-of-the-mill game.

I agree 100%, Minecraft's magic is going to make Minecraft yet another game I secretly play... Actually I probably won't do much playing with this lame ass magic BS. I loved the game when it didn't have much meaning or a "purpose". It was a 3D enviorment that you could do WHATEVER you wanted to it. Now, it's about casting magic spells on eachother and playing willie-nillie enchant meant with your magical rods, while the other mobs look at you like you're an idiot.
You mean the magic that's ALREADY IN THE GAME?
We've got the undead that just sprout out of the ground every night just... because (and the skeletons come complete with bow/arrows). Creepers are like exploding, mobile plants. Endermen can warp all over the place, and using their pearls, you can, too. You can build portals into ANOTHER WORLD, and you dont do so with Science!, you do so by lighting obsidian on fire, which works because WHY NOT. And then you go in there and do battle with Ghasts, giant flying.... THINGS.... that shoot fire at you. And zombie pigmen, which can occur in the overworld as well if a pig gets hit by lightning.
I could go on and on here.
Minecraft is NOT supposed to be a realistic world, it's supposed to be a FUN one. That's it, that's ALL.
Not liking a feature because they are calling it "magic" is *REALLY* damn stupid.
And I've seen this kind of idiocy before: If they had named it, just NAMED it, something OTHER than magic, most of the complaints about this would evaporate, PROVING how damn STUPID the complaints are to begin with.
Also, "lame-ass magic bs" sounds like someone trying to sound cool when they arent. Ugh. I hear 10-year-olds speak that way fairly often.
If you dont like the system, whatever. Dont use it. Nobody will care. But the *only* thing you're accomplishing is missing out on a set of in-game effects that may actually prove useful and entertaining because the devs called it "magic".
Had they called it "Call of Duty guns in potion form", you'd have JUMPED on it.

Yeah, but they're unique features Minecraft has. Now, tell me, does another game has potions in it? Oh yeah, LOTS. It does get boring to use the same features in every single game. And that's why Minecraft became a hit, afterall. There wasn't a game with sandbox style ever before. Well, there were, but they made people look for Minecraft. And now that Minecraft has it's own unique style, it can't incorporate other styles, otherwise it will get boring.
I honestly hate the idea of potions.....I know Notch is working VERY VERY hard to get us the knew updates but I think he is going overboard with the updates.......Taking it too far you know?
Minecraft is becoming more like an Rpg. Get items, do special missions, level up your character, Magic potions, It started as unique, and now is just your avargae magical RPG with pixelated graphics. <_< It will still be pretty buggy too.
I have no problems with chemistry, enchantment though seems like it could be a step too far into the realm of non-science. If it turns out to just be something benign to gameplay I could live with it, but if it ends up affecting gameplay greatly I may have to mod it away. I remain apprehensive of this update.
