I agree with those above who were concerned with Minecraft's new magical direction. So far the game has been pretty safe, morally speaking--no blood, no gratuitous violence, no immorality, etc. With it's focus on creation, exploration, survival and whatnot it's been the kind of game you didn't have to be ashamed to play or tell others about.
If magic is added, things will have to change for those with a moral compass. Hopefully we can continue to play the game, assuming the magic parts can be avoided. If not we may have to leave behind an otherwise acceptable game. Most likely I won't be able to discuss the game with those unfamiliar with it, and I'll almost definitely not be able to recommend it to others.
With that said, the rest of the additions look great and are already a lot of fun! I hope to see more of these.
what i think they should use the blaze rods for is you make a bow outta them and when u fire it, it shoots flaming arrows which do more damage then regular bows. :smile.gif:

Fundamentalists will have an issue with Minecraft now because their 'moral compass' will start spinning? Please! If there's anything in this video game that could possibly give the conscience a jolt, leave it to christians to pick magic as that one thing. (Is the nether a bit too much to take?)
Avoiding anything with a tint of the occult does not make a 'moral compass' any more refined than the average bear's.
Having said that, I'm also not a fan of the magic aspect. If the direction Minecraft has taken in the past is any guide, we can both be glad to know that it won't be necessary to make potions and 'enchant' weapons etc. in order to continue enjoying the game.
To be honest, I have to agree with disliking this new magic route. I'm all for magic and enchantments, but Minecraft feels more like it has the scientific roots than magic.
Even Zombies and Skeletons don't have to be magic, but when it comes down to enchantments, it gets to be a little too off-course for my tastes.
I prefer the industrial/scientific concepts, like using electricity through Redstone, and pistons. I was incredibly impressed by how well Industrialcraft and Buildcraft fit in to the Minecraft concept.
SUGGESTION:
Instead of enchanting, give us a smithy's table, or a forge of some sort, and allow us to apply certain enhancements (not enCHANTments) to weapons and such. Building a grinding stone to grind weapons with, increasing either their durability or passive critical rate, or applying torches/blaze rods to arrows/bows for fire arrows, or making spiked armor through applying iron spikes.
Magic is great and all but Runecraft did it better. It fit more with the Minecraft theme since it was more mysterious. This stuff looks more like spreadsheets. In fact the potion/ingredient system in particular looks almost exactly like Morrowind's... lol
No your not. I am not a fan of magic or killing. Unfortunately we will have a really hard time finding games with out these concepts. At least minecraft keeps it at a minimum at least for now.
our idea sounds cool, but AS WELL AS, rather than instead of, the magic system. Give people a choice, to go the techie route or the occultist route. It's a sandbox game, which by definition, is all about choice.
PS: Mr. 'Moral Compass' up at the top of this page (in article view, don't know where that post is in thread view from the forum link): I have a very strong moral compass, and I love the magic additions. Magic isn't necessarily evil, and besides, we're talking about VIRTUAL magic in a VIRTUAL world.

This. Right here. I believe it would fit in MUCH better this way then summoning up some magic spell and enchanting my tools. Magic? Ick. Minecraft used to be a stand-alone game. Nothing like it. Now its becoming a lame run-of-the-mill game.

Curse PremiumI just hope they add more redstone stuff before the full release of the game.
