I might give this a try.
im not so sure steam craft might not make it compared to other steam mods.
I hope it passes!
I understand that a contest over two weeks could get dull since it's hard to give it continuous publicity over a larger time span, but the "mod contest" could be run at the same time as other contests, since mods are really a completely different animal than texture packs, videos, maps, and so on.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that any mod that wins with the current system will almost certainly already be well known enough so as to make the entire thing completely redundant. You've got to announce the theme earlier (perhaps even before the previous contest ends), and disallow mods that have made unfair progress. Otherwise it's not really a contest. Contests have constraints, and allowing pre-made mods to enter is completely unfair.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I think this is a great way to give the people out there without much publicity some of the action (and keep something cool on the front page all the time to boot), but the way you have it set up at the moment is flawed.
(Since I LOVE Steampunk <3)
Good Luck to everyone :3
I don't know the answer to this problem with the contests, there are a huge amount of ideas that are already implemented, you need to try harder to pick themes that no one has covered already (good luck with that), or else not take any submissions for work that is already done at the time of contest start. (which isn't really fair, either)
For sure you should come up with, and publish, a theme/medium schedule for the next couple of months NOW, that way, people can work on the ones they feel the most passionate about, or the most skilled at, and it would get more people involved at the same time.
It is a good idea, too, because Andre is probably already hard at work on Holly-Jolicraft or whatever, and it would be a shame for everyone else to get caught with their pants down again.
To this, and other similar sentiments in this thread - we are taking your position into consideration. If it looks like the current time-frame will be insufficient in the next few days, we may extend it. A lot of it depends on you guys. :happy.gif:
Also, in regards to concerns over submitting already-existing work - it was never my expectation that artists & programmers would be in the mindset to produce stuff on a tight deadline, until they had a chance to see and do it a few times. As we've noted before, we're testing the waters with this new contest concept. If you guys seem to like it (and so far, most do!), we are more than happy to adjust how it works to fit you guys, since you guys are the focus of it. It was planned from the beginning that contest entries would be somewhat less stringent in the first few weeks as everyone got a feel for what it was, and how it worked. If you guys are already comfortable with the idea of doing original works in a constrained time-frame, I will adjust the parameters of the rules tomorrow accordingly.
I have added a poll at the top of this article, to feel out certain aspects of the contest. If you want to be heard on the listed topics, now is the time - any voted changes will go into effect very quickly. :happy.gif:
The entire purpose of the contest was to see what sort of creative things people could come up with on a tight deadline, to give artists/modders/etc who may otherwise not be well known a chance for some needed exposure by showing off their capabilities, and to have a good time! Our first run was a touch less restrictive on entry requirements than we originally planned for, but that had more to do with the "newness" of the contest than anything else - it would've been silly to place a restriction like that without knowing who would be interested in such an intense challenge. As response has been pretty strong, we're willing to speed up the placement of more concrete rules, as long as you guys are. :smile.gif:
That's exactly why we listen to you guys - it's all about you, and we want it to be something everyone looks forward to and enjoys! Part of that is making sure you're heard, and that you know we hear you. It is, without a doubt, my favorite part of the job. :smile.gif:
So...yeah...I love the idea of the contest, but only if it is closed to pre-existing content. Newcomers for the win!
Also, I might think about re-submitting my moderator application, but, you know what...no. You guys are biased in your selection and have shown favouritism on what users the rules are enforced on in the past. So not even if you paid me...not even if you begged me.
Check out my epic Request!
That is very possible. We may make a compilation of winners and honorable mentions of many different mediums, depending on how popular the contest is. :biggrin.gif:
I totally agree with this. I've had months to build up content for Steamcraft, tweak it and make sure everything is nice and shiny, and it would absolutely be unfair to submit it. As much as I'd love to have it win a contest, I'd rather not shove it in ahead of people who have had much less time to work on theirs, so I think, even if it were allowed by the rules of this contest, I wouldn't submit it.
Oh, and as for the comment about atomic power: artistic license :biggrin.gif:
