Is hardcore gonna be the only difficulty once 1.9 comes out, or is it replacing hard? I just want to know what they mean by hardcore mode being "locked-in".
from what I see in the pre-release2, hardcore is a game mode, not a difficulty setting. I assume that "locked in" means that once you choose it when making a new world you can't change it. (without something like NBTedit that is)
More items without any uses kind of bugs me, but considering they're adding potions and potion effects, maybe they're just getting things ready for that. I'd like to know what the point of fermented spider eye is though. Why can't you eat it to, minus the poison damage? Personally, I think you should be able to eat mushrooms to, but they poison you if raw (not part of mushroom stew). Then again, the brown ones don't look like they'd be poisonous. Anyhow, looking forward to potion and potion uses.
Hopefully, they give blaze rods more of a use than just for blaze powder. Seriously, people. They look like re-skinned sticks. Why not capitalize on it and make them a tool for creating better weapons? That would defintely give us a good reason to visit the Nether. That, and if Ghast tears = a tool/ weapon set stronger than diamond. (I'm pretty sure killing ghasts is harder most mobs, especially without making them drop their loot in the lava. If not, they could at least be stronger than iron tools.)

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
