Is hardcore gonna be the only difficulty once 1.9 comes out, or is it replacing hard? I just want to know what they mean by hardcore mode being "locked-in".
It means exactly what it sounds like... you make a new world in hardcore mode and that's it - no changing to creative, peaceful, etc. Now what difficulty level (easy, normal, hard) is hardcore mode? I don't know. I'd like to think that the whole premise of it would mean your locked in on HARD difficulty (because easy doesn't sound too hardcore).
Of course the idea here is if you're about to die, you can't save your world by switching to normal or peaceful mode quickly.
The stone brick stairs and red brick stairs are experiencing an issue. Its black on the steps. This is a report of an issue. Where can I post this?

When @jeb_ first mentioned that they were going to let fences attach to adjacent objects, I was concerned, because I love using a fencepost as a central pole in my spiral staircases.
I thought it would look terrible, but now that I've seen it actually work, I really think it improves the effect.
The new fence collision boxes are kind of frustrating in the staircases... but I can deal.
I hated 1.8, but 1.9 is looking more and more promising. Can't wait for the full release to come out.
Of course, I'll probably stick to the 1.7.3 server I'm currently playing on until a few mods I consider critical catch up to 1.9 (buckit/spout, void fog remover, enderman and creeper "terrain damage" removers, and either scuba mod or something to deal with the new drowning behavior).
For the minecraft pre-release 2 i hate to tell all you people that love goin crazy over makin babys of cows chickens, sheep, and pigs but all you need is 1 wheat for the rest of the game and it never goes away i think it should be a little harder to populate animals by having to have 2 wheat, one for on animal and another for the other animal, and it should be consumed and not kept forever because then there is no point of farming if all you have to do is rapidly right click on 2 of the same animals repedativley and have an infinite amount of food, all i had to do was make them follow me into the fance i made while holding wheat in front of their faces and i thought it was all cool until i right clicked to give the 2 cows the wheat i had (i was holding 2 wheat) and the wheat never went away and i was able to click rapidly until my whole fence was packed in with animals. then the sword did the rest. Its either they make a baby first that doesnt drop anything and then it drops loot when fully grown, or have them consume the wheat because this has made the game wayyyyy to easy...
I thought an Alpha was the real pre-release of a game, before everything is done and the time to try out new things still was going on.
I thought Beta was the finished game, the time to find the bugs and fix them so that the game can be released.
Somehow Minecraft seems to use the beta-time to add more stuff, like it's an Alpha, and going in the oposite direction to a regular beta by adding bugs instead of removing them...
So if any of you running 64 bit systems are just getting crashes with 1.9, you need to update your Java. The auto updater won't give you the version you need. Search for Java RTE 7 and install that. It will fix the crashing issue.

I'm assuming there gonna add more Nether items.
