But this game has so much more potential? What about villagers? And lanterns? And all the other things Notch said he would implement but never did?
Good lord man! Read some previous posts! The code freeze doesn't mean Minecraft is over and will never be updated again! It simply is a cut off date for new features PRIOR to the official release. What would you rather have:
1. Game officially released with few bugs and optimization to code and performance.
2. Game officially released with many bugs and broken features crammed in at the last moment.
3. Game's official release is constantly pushed back for ever because they never have the quality needed for an official release.
After the game is out, Notch will resume adding content, and updates. The code freeze is to simply catch up with bugs and get the game released. THIS BY NO MEANS MINECRAFT WILL NOT CONTINUE RECEIVING UPDATES!
A code freeze for Minecraft is now in effect! In software jargon, a code freeze is essentially a tight set of restrictions placed on what can be added to game code, with a focus on polishing, bug-fixing and streamlining the game instead of adding more features. This assures that Minecraft will be released as a smooth, mostly (or entirely!) bug-free game.
Minecraft has gone through some amazing changes since its humble beginnings, adding tons of features and content. What have been some of your favorite additions to the game?

God: I created the world. Notch: I created an endless vitual world.
God: I created a circle. Notch: ...
I have only been playing this game since Beta 1.3 a few days before Beta 1.4. Right now the new features and updates aren't about to end, I think that the development stage of Minecraft is just the beginning. The first few months I was playing Minecraft I was considered to be a new player, while all the players since Alpha are the masters of the game. However, about a year from now I'll probably be talking to somebody about this game and I'll tell that I have played since Beta they will be in awe. The same goes for everyone playing right now. Those playing from Beta or earlier will be the true masters of this game, the addiction to this game. Long Live Notch! Long Live Mojang! Long Live Minecraft!
NUUUU!! No more new stuff?
I loved everything!!
WHY MOJANG?! WHY?!
THIS ISN'T THE END OF UPDATES!!!!!!! Maybe if I shout at you people you'll get it. *sigh* Of course you won't. This doesn't mean the end of updates. The code freeze is simply to ensure the official release is as bug free as possible and then they'll resume adding content. There's still quite a bit Notch wants to do with the game.
I think Herobrine should be made real, but not as an ordinary or rare mob. Instead make him a boss in a stronghold. And make the loot you get from defeating him worthwhile as well.
Several bugs need fixing as well. These include minecart trains/storage carts only working normally east - west, paintings appearing dark when touching a ceiling, the lag on SMP that often kills players, especially when they are near lava, and others that I don't seem to recall now.
Boats need to be made more durable so that long ocean trips are more worthwhile. Right now, they are pretty fragile.
