Notch recently noted a possible end to the currently-frozen scoring system: experience orbs may begin counting towards a score total in the near future! The recent screenshot also reveals another likely addition, in the form of Hardcore Mode - death means world deletion. At the moment, Minecraft only offers item loss as a potential deterrent from death; the inclusion of an optional Hardcore Mode would certainly provide a new sense of danger and accomplishment to an already excellent game!
I think they should take out the instant difficulty changing, its easy to cheat with that. I think that when you start a world you should choose the permanent difficulty of that world. But anyways, YES finally a hardcore mode. I use to do this all the time before i played multiplayer, I'd play on hard and when i died id start a new world.
Wow notch was't kidding when we die in hardcore the only button is delete
world
And so Save-scumming comes to Minecraft!
Hehe. Not that it would make much sense to pick Hardcore mode if you just intend to save-scum your way around the rules... But on the other hand, Hardcore players would probably still keep backups in the event of world-corrupting bugs or system crashes, and then when their Hardcore character they've had for six month dies, it would probably be pretty tempting to use the backup...

Retired StaffHardcore is only in SSP, otherwise SMP would just be so easy to grief.
Im sure theyll have a working system for smp.
It'd be cool if when you died, everything that you made and crafted dissapeared on smp.
