Remember how they said terrain mapping would have higher limits? I don't think they did to much to use that new update, most worlds seem flatter then any 1.7 (or earlier) maps.
I cant play the 1.8 update for more than 5 minutes at a time and sometimes it crashes right when i get into my 1.8 survival world. Ive seen the error thing (error appears as text document on my desktop whenever minecraft crashes) and it is something to do with a fatal exception error in java.

You can also look up "Mcadmin" for Minecraft servers. Although personally-I think that list is a joke. A high percentage of those servers are not even online, updated, empty servers. etc..

For you uninstall Java completely through control panel. Make sure you have no old files of Java on your system. Make sure you are downloading the correct package. Also is this a 64 bit OS? (WinXp64) ? I would manually download the correct package. I had this issue when I first started playing Minecraft. Also make check to make sure Java is running at "High Piority". That is all I have done and it works.
Make sure your Web browser is updated, also make sure your Java is updated. Even still, I would uninstall Java completely then go and download the correct package from the Java website only.
*If your paying from a Credit/Debit card. I hope you have a lot of patience.
