the snowman is craftable, and covers the the blocks it walks over with snow. it also throws snowballs at mobs.

If these things are suicidal, then put one on a post where mobs can't reach it and use it as a creeper lure! It'll keep creepers from sneaking up on you as you leave your base, because they'll all be trying to kill the snow golem.
