I'm in the same boat. 1.7 had around 20-35 FPS, but 1.8 is yielding 4-8 FPS. Both are on lowest settings possible (1.7's render distance is set to "Normal," however, where as 1.8's render distance is set to "Tiny").
And to make matters worse, it seems as if this problem isn't widespread and, as such, the amount of attention it's getting (both from forum users and Mojang themselves) is nominal at best.
break the chest and put it back down. Fixed it for me. The only bug was switching my 1.7 world to 1.8, the chests had a black box around them, but it was fixed when i broke them and put em back down

Intel Core i5-4690K, Asrock Z97X Killer ATX Mobo, Corsair Vengeance 16GB, Hyper 212 Evo, GTX 1060, EVGA 750Watt PSU, 840 Evo 120GB SSD, 1TB WD Blue, NZXT H440 (black/red).
I feel your pain and i'm on Mac OS 10.5.8
Put down a torch next to the chest and remove it. Worked for my chests.
