To the people thinking having boss battles is copying terraria, that means Terraria is copying other games like Blood and Spiral Knights. It is not copying you idiots.
This is the idea notch had for minecraft from the beginning. NPC vilages have been in the works for a while, and the only other really defining thing this adds are dungeons, and if you don't like then just leave them alone. Minecraft has always sorely lacked progression. That's the problem with sandbox games. He's adding things so you'll have a purpose to build. Instead of sounding like my mom and saying a sentence like "does this color look good for the walls?" you'll say "Man, if I don't build bad ass walls, some NPC asshats are gonna stab me in the face." The point is, all notch wants to do is add purpose while keeping the make your own fun aspect, and he did it well.
Bosses do seem like a good way to keep the player busy, but I REALLY don't want this to be too much like Terraria. I have Terraria and think its a great game, but I want to keep my favorite game and my 5th favorite game apart.

Sometimes, I like to eat large slabs of cement from the sidewalk.
Oh, and I'm a brony.
then there might be a problem, you might have to change a number of game mechanics around, like maps and crafting
in terraria the draw is adventure, crafting is just a side note sometimes resulting in the bigger drops being apart of a dungeon or defeated boss since most of the crafting recipes for the best items are very steep, sometimes demanding 120 of a single element to obtain, this also means that the more complex things (like minecraft's red stone) are automated, no more tinkering with wire to set off a trap properly, just place and go, a better example is its crafting in general, you have the matierials? here's your sword, with poison! in minecraft you have to construct your sword and even give it it's attribute, but even then? there's no escalation
that some's up my point perfectly, in terraria things can get very hectic very quickly to the point were it's fight or die, it has a lot of umph, where in minecraft you have to tell the system what to do, again red stone holds my point perfectly, those little videos on the front page like the cara mia or the working television had to be made with a lot of red stone, in terraria when you make it its another scenario, if you could craft a tv you'd be able to give it channels like placing cameras in your mines to check on your mushroom crops, or get to play a game like spleef while night passes against your friends, hell it could be the multiplayer sever altogether, in minecraft you have to go out and make your own fun and figure out where your supposed to go and even then none of the game play will have improved, especially death, since the only reason i don't explore is the fear of losing all my stuff
i guess the best way to say it, is, everything's a resource in minecraft there's nothing bigger or better its all equal, like if i used a fire sword! regular sword damage, -3 hearts, with a burning effect, -1/2 over 5 sec., not very good
hurrah minecraft's improving, just not well enough
have what you will with the comment, it was DOA from the start
In my opinion, everything seems awesome so far. However, I don't want Minecraft to turn into Terraria. I do agree Minecraft should be rougelike but let's try to keep it as sandboxy as possible. Good work Mojang.
What could be possible is a boss that could Throw blocks at you as it could also spawn creepers to it's side like the eye of Cthulhu spawning demon eyes, or is it soul eaters, to back it up!
