I don't think that is actually a sand block in Steve's left hand, I think it's just sand that's a block higher then the rest of the sand around the chest.

Note of Dismissal: When God gives you lemons, you do not make lemonade, you book a flight to heaven and ask Mr. God why he gave you lemons, I mean you obviously thought he wanted you to do something but why make lemonade? You aren't Tired, you aren't dehydrated, you aren't requesting a drink, you aren't fond of lemonade, you aren't keen to lemons, you don't believe in things appearing, so why? Just take the lemons and step on them, or invent a Super Computer to help manage the lemons to invent a machine that destroys all self-appearing lemons if that's your sort of thing.
Just tested it, chests DO face toward sunset in 1.7.3, no matter how you're oriented in relation to them.
If that is indeed a sunset in Notch's picture, he changed it so that chests face the player.
alright, quick sand thing and left handed block holding is getting out of hand.. so take a hint in this image here... count the pixels and you'll get an idea.

there is also more brushy scrub and cacti are alternating sizes. its so obvious. you should be feeling pretty stupid.
