Maybe this will clear things up.
After some testing, I found out that the sand that appears to be in his left hand is actually that.
The block is at the same angle as a block you hold in your hand and, opposing against the F1 possibility, it could be zoomed in,
for you see more of the block currently when normal. Or Notch is just screwing with us and flipped the image.
There is no way to fully know unless Notch confirms it but I hope it is duel wielding! :biggrin.gif:
Oh, and I love the vines. Terraria inspired perhaps? Either way, absolutely love them.

Thats what I thought as well. The first thing I'm doing with those vines is them to make a nice ivy-covered entrance to a cave/stronghold. That'll be awesome.
um, no, he made the HUD dissaper, that makes held items dissaper aswell
If you draw a line above all the HUD, you get a sliver of the block about the same size as the sand block in the picture.
One other thing is that the gui (though unlikely) could be a reduced size.
This still lies on if the picture is zoomed in or not though.
well obviously... but i guess you didnt count me rotomicpanda, because i have a mac not dell

Yeah, they don't blend as well as they did in 1.7+. I'm certain he'll tweak that back before release though.
