Pretty sure it's quicksand (to the left of the chest).
Reason: If you look closely you can see that it is actually forming from a block right next to the chest (you can see a faint border of the quicksand and the sand block the chest is on. Looking more like an animated texture than one thats closer (and in the turned off UI you can't see things you're holding either. So it's not a left handed block)
Edit: Either that or like..invisible chests.
Remember he said its 2 NEW things he worked on. Can't be lighting of biome since he already revealed that.
I respectfully disagree, my good Sir. One might point out that the orientation of the sand blocks is different in your image than in the image I provided. By examining my proof image, I believe that no other conclusion can be reached but that the chest has been slightly reduced in size.
the clouds are better now! They used to be made up of visible cubes (as seen here) and now they are smooth and randomized.
The lines are still there, but less noticeable then in your picture.
I have read all 17 pages so far And still don't "know" what it is. Maybe Notch will let us in on what it really is later, If the second thing is even actually in the Picture.
I do see that the chest is smaller with the lock sticking out, that might be it. Everything else I can see is already in the game or was shown at PAX.
It's definitely not a left hand holding sand. The block you are holding also is hidden when the hud is, so you cannot see the block and not the hud. The picture doesn't look like it has had dimensions altered to erase the hud either.
The left of the chest also doesn't look like it has a block sitting next to it or at the corner because you can still see the side of it.

I did a bit more quick sleuthing, and the pit doesnt stop. By looking at the wall being it, you can see that it opens up and doesn't even connect to make a circular pit; it is the low-lands of the desert. So, it is very possibly a chest in the pit.
The "left-handed" sand DOES seem to be too low to be held by Steve, but the sand also couldn't be sitting on the ground either. It's angled too strangely compared to the chest. Maybe it just seems like Steve isn't holding it because our eyes aren't used to seeing items held in the player's left hand?
Dude thats an ocean or it's already the new sunset that notch mentioned....

Examine the orientation very carefully:

I think I'm good at this sleuthing stuff
That is because they are behind a ledge. If they are behind a 1 block heigh wall, they will look 2.5 tall instead of 4, because of the horizonal view.
is it a chair or table or something like that?
(picture taken from a reply to this thread.. forgot author) The corner of the sand block matches up with the corner of the chest.
The corner of the sand block does NOT match up with the corner of the chest.
Figure it out.
Also, there would NOT be a gap between of them if it were placed. Which leads you to believe that it is actually being held.
