I thik leveling up would be cool, but the permadeath doesn't seem popular. I would hope that is can be an option in the Options screen.
Hunger would definately make the game more realistic though
Y'know, I bet there'd be much, much less anger if the PC Gamer article didn't use the term "permadeath." And if the guy that posted this here didn't use "permadeath." The article very clearly says that it's talking about how if you gain levels and die, you lose all your levels. I missed that initially myself, because I foolishly trusted the human being that posted to tell us about this. But if one reads the article, one sees that Notch is referring to losing levels. When he says that it may be too harsh, he says that they could reduce it by half -- how could that refer to "game deletes your save file immediately after death?" It refers to level loss, or perhaps more specifically EXP loss (the latter being friendlier, after a point).
With this in mind, we should note that the only real change is that we're gaining a level system that we will be constantly climbing and re-climbing. One that won't necessarily impact the gameplay heavily. The hunger thing is a long time coming, since this is a game meant to be about survival. And survival becomes quite simple after the first day (heck, I just restarted for kicks and found half a stack of iron in my first mining trip; it's a lot easier when you know the steps). Hunger means that you constantly have to maintain yourself, as people often have to.
I'm actually more excited for the rest of the update. And more exciting is the prospect -- not the certainty, but at least the prospect -- of increasing the map height to 256. And I can barely fathom it going further still. That would be most exciting.
In summary... calm down, guys. It's not actually permadeath. This is just a case of malapropism gone wrong.
Eh, personally, I don't see how a permanent death system could make the game more appealing in any ways, but thats my 2 Cents on this. And also, in my opinion, NPCs and NPC Villages just make Minecraft look like a really failed attempt at an RPG.
Losing levels when dying is a great idea, people take dying in MC way too lightly. I've had friends tell me they would kill themselves to teleport back to spawn, which is totally against the spirit of a survival game.
I doubt the levelling will hinder the instaplayability of the game at all, it will probably just add perks at certain levels, so toggling it off will just be disabling possible benefits.
Notch makes it very clear that if he feels that something isn't 'fun', it won't be in the game; grinding isn't fun, so I'm sure that it won't be an issue.
These updates make survival mode more realistic and more about survival, those who just want to build stuff can play in creative mode. Adding extraneous 'toggles' will just fragment the game; maybe turn hunger off in easy, but anything more than that is just pandering to those who can't decide between creative mode and survival mode.
Any most importantly, as it has already been said; Notch knows what he's doing.
i dont like this idea at all. If Minecraft is supposed to be a sandbox game, then this makes it the opposite. Sandbox games you build stuff, this completely chages that. I HATE THIS

Creative Mode is a sandbox game. Survival Mode is a survival game with sandbox element.
Even if this wasn't the case, how does this "completely chage" you being able to build stuff? It's Minecraft, you'll always be able to build stuff.

Sigh....
How will this update make it so you can't build stuff?
And sandbox games aren't where you build stuff, they are where you can do what you want when you want where you want, without any artificial constrictions.

this is what happens when casual gamers get introduced to an indie game partially inspired by the hardcore games and in a fledgling genre.
First mod for 1.8... Probably removal of permadeath in favor of just losing exp. If you wan to give those ''play'.' class='bbc'>hardcore' players something to play with, add a 1 life to live option and just be done with it.
Playing the game itself is just too prone to "oops, creeper" to have any sort of dynamic like this. That is WHY you made creepers like they are afterall, so people can have the "oh ****!" factor, pick up their pieces, and go back to what they were doing. Death has enough penalty in the fact that you lose whatever you had on you, which can make hours of mining go to waste instantly. Isn't this enough?
maybe the EXP will help you gather materials quicker, so you can build more. E.g. you get mining EXP when mining, so you will mine faster/gather more drops, similar for digging EXP, chopping EXP and crafting EXP. Maybe there is even killing EXP for killing mobs, so you punch faster and do more damage.
Hunger would definately make the game more realistic though
Reiterating this because people don't get it.
Besides, its an update and still experimental. If it doesnt turn out well, He can always pull out/work on the bad features.
Fingers crossed on this one...
