The at heart part is what bothers me. That was what Notch originally wanted the focus to be, not the general backing.
I generally agree with this, but I must admit, however, when I was making The Survival Mode That Wasn't (see this), that the focus actually dropped from building (because there's no longer a need for shelter) to exploring, mining, and when I get the overworld mobs in, fighting. In fact, in the days of Survival Test I would rarely build because there was no real need to.
But, considering that creative came first, and many of the block types that we still commonly use came from that, it's hard to disagree that building was still a strong aspect early in development. I think it was just masked for a little bit, however, by other mechanics like those in survival test and even in the ideas I was trying to implement with my mod.
Sounds okay and all, but it would be a big mistake if not toggle-able. People would probably just quit MC all together. And just because they paid for it doesn't mean they'll quit. Look at WoW. It's a 50dollar game that cost 15 bucks every month. And people quit that game even if they get bored of it. And you only have to pay for MC once, so yeah back to my main point. It's a good idea but make it optional.
From the sounds of this topic, I don't think Notch has much choice BUT to make it a toggle. As a builder, this isn't my update, unless the height restrictions thing from yesterday works out.
Notch decides to add a new block/item/mob/feature. Everyone rages, says they won't play minecraft ever again, blah blah blah, and then when its finally added in, they are still playing, and making use of the new feature. EVERY SINGLE UPDATE YOU GUYS DO THIS. KNOCK IT OFF.
Why is everyone bitching about this? It seems like a welcoming addition to Minecraft, and everyone is whining about it? Grow up. No wonder this is the worst community on the Internet. Jesus.

The chances of digging straight down into lava increase drastically if you have diamond in your inventory.
Its proven by science.

(number of males who play minecraft) / (number of females who play minecraft) = ERROR: cannot divide by zero
I don't care what gameplay elements this update brings he could make a super creeper with a pogo-stick for all i care. SO LONG AS I CAN STILL REMOVE AND PLACE BLOCKS TO BUILD JUNK (and redstone)! and Notch will NEVER remove that I can guarantee that. People talk BS about the feel or the essence of the game being ruined by these changes. The only thing that will ruin minecraft is if the ability to remove and place blocks was taken away for some stupid reason.
This update I believe can only enrich the game, and I say this as a building focused player. I will probably not raid a stronghold until one month after the patch comes out. Mainly because it doesn't interest me much. But when I am tired of building a pointless building it's good to know I can go look for a stronghold. And who knows strongholds may end up having special building tools like a pick with unlimited uses (or a freaking huge lot of them).
The Game is also still a sandbox only now it's a sandbox and RPG all at once.
permanent death is GAY a for you . But, Hunger is awesome a I want perma death to be optional and NOT a part of multiplayer. Also XP is cool. Can't wait.
Ooooh, levelling - how unique - never seen that before! And oooh, he has still no idea what to level.. what surprise! When do we understand that Mr. Notch has no creative ideas for MC?
Please notch, step down and let somebody with ideas take over, please, please, please!
You have the money now let the pros do the creative work!
Ooooh, fighting monsters - never seen that before! Guess we can't have that in the game because its not unique enough. Woah, Minecraft wasn't the first game to have building in it! Better remove that too, because you know, its not "creative" enough :dry.gif:
