i dont know why everybody keeps dissing pistons so much, from how i see it, it is alot better:
No ability to break after an update and having to go through all the process of reimplementation.
they shouldnt be able to launch entities, because they push one block, its really not hard for you to do the same stuff without that ability (seeing as a piston can push a NON-extended piston, thus able to make more stable "launches")
yes they come in 1.7 soon, pistons arent the only thing they were hoping to add, the rest isnt on the top of my head right now.. but theres more things, like enhanced block graphics, at least on a few.
plus, what i dont think anyone understands is.. in november is the OFFICIAL release, A.K.A. may or may not be able to be bought in a store, and have a disk.
doesnt mean minecraft wont get new blocks or mobs or anything, in fact with them releasing officially, attention will be drawn even more to minecraft, means people buy it more, mojang gets more money, thus, more incentive to keep adding things for more and more people to want to try the game and possibly buying it.
so people who complain about all the promised things not being implemented, notch has stated a couple that they wouldnt do for various reasons, but as for the rest, just relax, and wait a bit, i mean in the meantime pistons can really grab attention, you could make a 1 block wide walkway against a wall and a long drop (into water, or lava, or even just to the ground) or you could make a ceiling that collapses with pistons, or side parts on walls that push sand or gravel down in a long hallway, causing a major problem with suffocation. i mean really people? those are just traps, just think of all the things that will be possible, hidden doors, pressing a button to raise your wall alittle at night against the mobs, or even a mob spawner trap too, just have the pistons push them into a watery grave instead of them aimlessly wandering into it on accident.
That's some good news to me! I'd rather they make the Adventure Update right the first time and delay it til 1.8. Also, I can't wait for pistons! Plus a new guy on the team should help speed things up! Also, the launch is starting to sound amazing, with the friends list, sever support, etc. Cannot wait!
When he sais "last major update" is he talking like the size of the halloween update or like the 1.6 update?
And will we still see new features after 1.8 or just bug fixes?
For those whining, Notch said that the "adventure mode" update will be 1.8 now. New features will be going in after the 1.8 update, but it will be with the big roll-out that will happen in November when Minecraft sort of "officially" loses its Beta status. Besides the price going up, I presume that will also be a major release to something like "Minecraft 2.0" or something of that nature.
Notch also tweeted that everybody who has currently paid for Minecraft will be able to get that version too, so don't panic. Yes, new major releases will be happening, but essentially the roadmap is now for 1.7 being the "Pistons release" (with perhaps a couple of surprises) and the 1.8 version will include the "Adventure mode" plus other changes related to that release.
The reason for this release is because too many people are whining that they want the Pistons update now. I find that sort of pathetic and may make this a rushed update. Simply put, I'm not looking forward to Thursday, and I will be making backups of the ".minecraft" folder just in case I accidentally update to 1.7.
This isn't saying that I won't use pistons (I will, in due time) but I'm hoping the bugs aren't too awful with this release.
1.) I don't believe there will cease to be updates after the official release. Most of the games on the market today have DLCs, expansions, patches, updates, etc.
2.) Proper server browser? Like having a list of IP addresses that you've connected to?
3.) Complaining won't fix anything.
4.) I'm very much interested to see how the friends thing works.
Dang! I can't wait for 1.8 and the big celebration of the launch for minecraft.
But the only thing i have to say is that i heard 1.7 with pistons will be coming out today and i was wondering if that was true and why is it not out.......
I ALSO heard that when Notch first started Minecraft, he promised to have a update every week or every other week. I understand now that the updates are spread apart but at least could of made it every month or twice a month. I say this because Minecraft has been in beta for over 4 months i'm pretty sure of. I hope that Notch will at least update before November... You gotta have a mini celebration in the summer.. School ruins everything so don't make it worst.

I agree, school sucks, I really hope that Notch focuses on the pc Minecraft, NOT Scrolls, I mean, Scrolls is a good idea, but this early? Not saying Minecraft is a new game either, but still, They should like try and get some BIG updates during the summer, then focus on scrolls, while still working on pc version.
Sach, you disappointed me. Mattis will only work on Scrolls (I knew this before reading this news), not Minecraft, which you didn't clarify in your post.
Jeb said: 1.7 will include pistons, shears, redstone->repeater fix and fences on fences. It will not include the new lighting
Then, he mentioned: Oh yeah, I forgot. 1.7 includes new cobblestone and clay brick textures
Notch posted this on his tumblr:Since 1.8 is still a significant time away, we’re going to have to stop being as secretive about it as we have. We’ll provide information about it as we go, but we’ll keep actual details secret. So, for example, we could say “added two new colors” without saying which ones, or “testing experience and leveling to see if it’s fun” without giving details on exactly how it works.
The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.
Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.

so just relax people and eat some gold! (apples)
