This weekend Dreamhack the bi-yearly LAN event held in Sweden is taking place, along side some of the most famous faces in e-sports (Day9 and Dignitas' Apollo) Jens from Mojang made an appearance, he presented a talk on Minecraft and fielded questions on the future of Minecraft.
During the one hour talk he covered a variety of points, and then he answered questions from the audience. Questions covered included whether or not Minecraft on Xbox 360 will have Kinect support, how Redstone will be developed in the future, how the end game of Minecraft will work and much much more.
You can watch the full presentation below, part A contains Jens discussing Minecraft, the technical challenges faced and the future, part B contains audience questions.
YOU guys have to have like a little thing on the side that shows the minecraft video interviews and when ever you guys do a live one its only showing that one until its over that would be amazing and really cool and easy to be still caught up with what's happing now
You guys can always watch the recording. It's about an hour and a half long in total.
The main points talked about in relation to actual gameplay:
- No plans for dynamic lighting, due to performance and gameplay issues (Mobs spawning, mobs burning in light, etc.)
- Dragons aren't 100% out-of-the-question, but they most likely won't happen
- Oceans (Basically just GIANT bodies of water) are probably not going to happen
- There will be an item or something to make diamond tools more powerful.
- No plans for obsidian tools
- Animals will be more persistent, only really spawning at the generation of a world.
- There's a possibility for infinite map height
- Pistons will not push players/blocks far (This was seen in the pistons WIP video though, but he explained why)
- Adventure mode will be more rewarding to players who like to explore (Notch mentioned this a while back as well)
- NPCs are pretty much planned (Most likely for adventure mode, although he spoke like they weren't)
- There's a high possibility for "exclusive" items/blocks found in certain areas. Sort of like the jungles, corruption, etc. in Terraria.
If I'm missing anything important, tell me, and I'll edit my post.

About the animals, Jeb said that they'd mostly all spawn when a world is generated, once dead, would have a very low chance of spawning again.
So it sounds like we have a reason to build cow and pig pens now. :huh.gif:
He also mentioned that some areas with have more exclusive items, like some biomes have rare things that others will not.

Reasonable, I guess
- Dragons aren't 100% out-of-the-question, but they most likely won't happen
Would prefer no dragons, so I'm fine with this.
- Oceans (Basically just GIANT bodies of water) are probably not going to happen
Given how easy it seems like it would be to implement, I can't understand why not.

Alright
- Animals will be more persistent, only really spawning at the generation of a world.
This seems stupid. Will we just slowly run out of animals?
- There's a possibility for infinite map height
Good to hear
- Pistons will not push players/blocks far (This was seen in the pistons WIP video though, but he explained why)
Understandable. Otherwise, pistons would probably slow down the game considerably.

Seriously, what the ffffff****? What's so wrong with making the Minecraft world more realistic, and giving more space for boats and water-dwelling mobs?

This also allows for my underground mountain island idea.
NO OCEANS? >
