It's pretty clear that 4J Studios is prepping the console editions for a major addition to the game. The new wood types introduced in the last update (July 24) add wood types that came out in the PC update version 1.7 (THe Update that changed the world). In addition to new biomes and the new woods, the game also went through one of the biggest changes to how the world actually generates.
Ex: on Pre-1.7 worlds, (what you have now on Consoles), you had the ability for Jungles and/or deserts to generate next to a taiga. Since Jungles are usually tropical in nature, it wasn't practical to find a Jungle next to a snowy place. As of 1.7, The game will try to avoid placing a desert next to Taigas, since biomes now have rules that they generate next to a biome of a similar temperature. So now you can have a Jungle next to a Desert (or Mesa as they'll come in 1.7) but you'll usually never see a snowy area next to an area that is supposed to be warm.
So just be patient. The new biomes will be worth the wait if you've never played Minecraft on the PC!
Of course 4j are doing their best to bring the new biomes to consoles! We can't forget that they have now 5 versions to work on so that may take more time than many people expected (including me lol).
The 1.7 biomes are great , but there is an issue for minecraft on old gen consoles : the map size is 864x864 blocks , so smaller than a single map on current gen consoles. The map is probably too small to contain dry AND cold biomes since only biomes of similar temperature can spawn next to each other. On PC , we can easily travel more than a thousand blocks just for example , switch from dry to medium biomes (plain , forest , etc.) and we need to walk for another 500-1000 blocks to reach cold biomes , which is WAY too much for a map less than a thousand blocks in size.
I hope 4j have already thought of a solution for that.
I think I seen people suggest before horses came out that it was possible that the newer biomes would be Xbox One/PS4/PS VIta exclusive due to the size of the worlds on Xbox 360 and PS3. I suppose a solution could be that they code things so that the biomes are smaller so they all fit in the world. Otherwise, the older console versions won't be able to get all of the new biomes in one world.
eventually the older systems are gonna stop getting updates...theres no way that they can keep up with the newer systems and the more stuff added to the older systems the higher the risk of more problems showing up as their processors try to sort through all the added code.
