I often play with my 6yo son, since we only have one live account, we just do a split screen and add another guest user. The game crashed the other day and everything the guest user had (emeralds among a lot of other useful items) were lost. We loaded the game back up and his progression as the main user was saved, however everything that the guest user had was completely lost.
Not sure if that's a bug to post or not, but I do believe an autosave should also save the guest users data too.
I have ran into that problem myself. I wish you could setup various non Xbox live users for local split screen play. That's the way I had it on my 360 and it worked out beautifully. I have found a workaround by having them unload their items in a chest.
I created another account with Microsoft, for free, to solve this problem. I believe they used to be called Silver accounts, I don't know what they are called now. With that I load my game, I login the second account and it keeps all the items in the inventory. It also keeps the skin selection, doesn't force my daughter to restart at the spawn point, and even allows for achievements. All at no cost.
I don't remember the exact details of how I did it, but I didn't create the account through the Xbox One, I went to the Microsoft website.
We normally unload everything into chests before either accounts exits the game to be safe, but the crash happened during play and ultimately lost it all. I'll look into a silver account for my son for when we do split.
I play splitscreen w/ all three of my kids. If you have a Xbox Live Gold account, then other "non-Gold" Xbox members added as family members have access to Xbox Live. You can also set these up with individual permissions so even if you have a young child you can lock it down so they can't do anything "unsafe" by accident. I do recommend you password protect your main account. I think you can have up to 4 such users.
Just set up an user account for your son. Don't use a guest account. I play with my family all the time on splitscreen and everyone maintains their possessions. Each person has an user account on the xbox, none are gold.

Thank you.
