Currently when players exit the game their controller stays on, but I'm suggesting that the controllers for everyone but Player 1 shut off automatically whenever those players exit the game in splitscreen mode. Why? Well, if their controller stays on, the first thing they usually want to do is shut off the controller... however, in attempting to do so, it is very possible for any person to make a mistake and shut off the entire console instead. Since it is Player 1 who is the only one who can save upon exiting (which makes sense to curb griefing), the sudden shut down of the console while Player 1 is still playing can result in the loss of game progress (and that loss can be significant if the group has been playing with autosave either off or set to a longer duration between saves). If the game were programmed such that the secondary player's controllers shut off automatically whenever they exited the game, this error would no longer be likely to happen. Player 1's controller, on the other hand, should be programmed to stay on after exiting the world or game as normal since it may be just that Player 1 is either just changing worlds or just changing games... something that Players 2, 3, & 4 cannot do on their own anyways as long as Player 1 is using the console.
I didn't actually know people turn off their controller like that.
You know you can disconnect the battery pack instead, right?
Yes, I know that can be done as well... but the button is programmed (i.e. holding down the center "X") to allow for turning off the controller without removing the battery pack and the same button also controls shutting down the console. Since the option is in the Xbox general programming, I think it's reasonable to expect that some people would be inclined to try to use it (and in my mind, I try to form a habit to use the appropriate software shutdowns whenever possible... as opposed to just "pulling the plug"). Although it might not be a frequent mistake, it should be a rather simple matter to program the game to automaticlaly shut off the Player 2, 3 & 4 controllers when those players exit the game and it might save the loss of game progress by ensuring that Player 1 can save the game before someone else accidentally shuts down the console rather than just shutting down their controller. It could also get rid of the annoying "please reconnect controller" sign that stays up in splitscreen whenever a Player 2, 3 or 4 leaves that game and shuts off their controller (even when they just pull the battery pack).
