I thought to make this quick thread to address a minor problem with animal despawning... Now, I'm not 100% sure of what the block limit is but I do know that animals (cows, chickens, etc) will not despawn if they can't move a certain number of blocks in any direction, and this is actually set to their AI's paths, which is a problem...
Basically, if an animal spawns in a spot where in two directions, there are walls, and the other two is a fall-to-death scenario, the animal's AI path will be unable to move, thusly setting it to not despawn... The problem with this is that the max limit of animals can easily be reached on accident if you spawn near a mountain-based biome or have spent too much time in one. The animals will spawn on the edges of the mountains and will be completely unable to move due to the mountain's walls and cliffs, forcing them to just stay there and never despawn. This is can get pretty annoying over time as it means you'll have to do extra work to get to them and basically edit the mountains so the problem won't continue...
My idea is basically change how they despawn based around on them being stuck within a closed structure (walls in every direction on the same Z-level that they are on) rather than taking into account of their AI pathing. This should fix the problem while keeping them farm-able...
Also, note that this isn't a big problem but it's still there and still quite annoying.
Your suggestion on a fix will cause more problems than the one it proposes to fix. It necessitates that holding pens must have walls. 100% of my pens will then no longer work.
Besides, this is all moot. Extreme Hill biomes no longer spawn cows, pigs and sheep specifically to address the issue of them getting stuck on ledges.

Be that as it may, some players like myself have older, biome-shifted worlds where extreme hills are now registered as something that can spawn animals, that rendering cliff cows and shelf sheep.
People seem to want (almost demand) trouble free farming in this game... but being a farmer IRL, nothing would be farther from reality. Personally, my favorite animal spawning/despawning scenario was the initial one... essentially no farming where animals spawned and despawned all over and with great enough frequency that you could just kill them as needed and not worry about anything else. I do agree with BP, I think using walls would make more problems for a lot of people. Since Xbox 360 worlds are smaller and limited in size, I think animals should despawn until fed by the player... at which point they no longer despawn, period... and they should all spawn (perhaps at different rates) in essentially all biomes. That is, there should be at least a small chance of random animal spawns in ocean biomes (survival island worlds) etc.

I have more of a problem with animals only spawning within what feels like 20 blocks of wherever you are at any given time. It's sort of annoying, and makes you feel like you're being stalked by a constant "mooooooo".
But more importantly... I'd liek to see leads stop breaking on me.
I put my coloured sheep on leads attached to fence posts inside the pen, and every time it breaks off... So I just gave up.

1. When I said "walls", I'm counting anything that can act like a wall (over 1 block high). This means as long as your animals are within a fenced or walled-in area, they will not despawn... The only way they would be able to despawn if you have a hole in the "wall" (or floor) for them to get out from (either through walking out or just flat-out falling out).
2. This problem is happening on the newest update for me.

I still think it's not the best solution. In fact, I don't think a problem exists for there to be a solution to. The major issue of mobs getting stuck on ledges has already been addressed.

Are you sure they are spawning in an EH biomes? Because my current base is in EH and this doesn't happen to me. I do get a whole mess of chickens, though.

Cliff Cow and Shelf Sheep sounds like it would be a great cartoon. Like Ren and Stimpy. Or Rick and Morty.
