even though we have rain and thunder, I think minecraft would be more exciting with more natural dangers up above (Cough cough *asteroids* Cough!) how about asteroids? They could vary in size and look a little like a giant chunk of obsidian or stone, each one can include various materials inside them. And if you're thinking " What if it hits my house? all my things will be destroyed!" there are blocks that could be added to repel the asteroids, such as invincible glass or some sort of force field with a durability level. There will also be devices that will send an electrical charge or light up when an asteroid is coming. Also, when the asteroids hit, they will only have the power of two TNT. for more information go to TDMasteroidMod.com

Sorry, but I cannot support this suggestion. What you are suggesting would just be griefing without a player, similar to when lightning strikes your roof and the fire spread is on.
I do like the idea in principle, but I would only support it if it does no damage to the impact site. So basically if it lands on your roof, it will just be a large chunk of rock sitting up there that you can quickly mine. Perhaps toss in some kind of rare material that you can only get from asteroids?
In general though, this idea is not for survival. Minecraft is primarily a game about creating and building, not going out to do your various tasks and returning to find an asteroid has damaged your house.
I love space garbage in games. You should be able to toggle between it though. Some players might not want there hard work destroyed by a few troll asteroids.

you can toggle it on and off each time before you load the world
Unless the asteroid was some rare metal that can be used for something else (which is in itself a whole other topic of debate) I don't see any point to it. The nonchalant mention of "invincible glass" and "force fields" does less to sway my opinion.

So pretty much everyone will turn it off right away since it still serves no purpose; and if everyone turns it off, what's the point of it being in the game?
I would see this as viable if it is shut off by griefing (like mobs or simply treat it as a mob) and when it impacts something ALL materials it destroys is now collectable as if hit with silk touch.
Impact would have to be minimal though, I cant see an entire city destroyed (not real life) but more of a creeper sized explosion from a new material
It could have the metal called Platinum, and maybe an alien can be in every one or two asteroids
Okay... Let me start over.
I'm not completely against this idea (even though I'm pretty sure you stole it from Terraria). I don't like that it would destroy stuff though; that does not sound fun to me at all. And if you're going to suggest having preventive measures added to the game, you can't just mention some hypothetical block or device without detailing how those are crafted / acquired / function / etc.
Since you snipped off the last half (the important half) of my post I'm going to reiterate: What would the purpose of the asteroid be? Again, simply saying "Platinum" hoping I'd be placated is not winning me over. Because then I have to ask, What would the purpose of the platinum be?
To put it in short: Why do we want this, how can we stop it, what benefits would it have? Platinum and aliens says nothing. Cool, we have this metal...that does nothing and this enemy...that does and gives nothing.
Platinum (lets just go with this for conversational pieces) could bring about higher quality armor and weapons. Other substances in a meteorite could also be used for higher quality crafting of potions, health items, etc. Enemies that now spawn as a result could also drop rare materials that again can be useful for advanced crafting.
As one would gain higher quality materials, the damage would have to be the side effect. As I mentioned I wouldnt want to see anything more than a creeper sized damage upon impact, which shouldnt be so horrid that one cant overcome that in a short period of time, given possible rewards.
Honestly I cannot see any block in place for a strike, unless you get hit and then get drops to craft against other hits, such as beacon powers that need say 4 to cover a specific area (perhaps higher quality ingredients will cover a higher area). As an example, a beacon that has "Aura Protection I" would cover say a 50x50x50 area Aura II would go say 75x75x75 and so on up to whatever Aura you deem appropriate for this discussion (say V for 150x150x150 or limit to just a couple). When a meteorite hits an aura, you gain the benefits but no damage or whathaveyou.
Again, I personally think this would be a decent addition, toggled in host options for those who dont want to see that. There is a plethora of possibilities, all thats needed is viable ideas instead of "Sell it to me"

Build Planes, Boats, Cars, Airships and fight!
What's the point in this exactly? It sounds like nothing but a hassle to me.
Stay fluffy~
Dynamic environment and a sense of a larger world we can't get to above.
