Okay. This is not one of my better suggestions, but I will make it anyway.
6 string + 1 gunpowder = 6 fuse
Connect one end of a fuse to a TNT block, lay down a line of fuse to a safe distance and set it on fire with a flint and steel. A fizzing spark will slowly burn along the fuse until it reaches the TNT and sets it off.
I know we can already set off TNT remotely with redstone, but let's think about a few other things fuses might be able to do.
For one, the fizzing spark takes time to burn down the fuse, so there is a natural delay without setting up redstone repeaters.
For another, a fuse is not redstone, so you don't have to worry about accidentally cross circuiting with any redstone circuits, although it may connect up with other fuses.
I can think of two other ways fuses can be useful:
A burning fuse may be able to set adjacent blocks of netherrack on fire, which would be useful for activating fire barriers when MOBs come a calling.
Burning fuses could also have a mesmerizing effect on hostile MOBs, like the zombie, creeper, and skeleton. These MOBs, and perhaps others, will follow the burning spark as it makes its way down the fuse in much the same way as cattle and sheep follow the player when he is holding wheat. This would lead the MOBs away from the player or villagers in an emergency, and could lead them into traps. The most obvious trap would be to have the fuse lead to a block of TNT, but a fuse could also lead them into monster pens or other useful places.
If these reasons don't convince you that fuses are a good idea, maybe this will ...

Don't forget thar redstone is a limited resource, where as gunpowder and string are limitless. It's a bit silly to be blowing up your red stone all willy nilly

Fireworks are actualy something that we set of with an electrical charge as oppose to with a fuse. Yes the fireworks themselves have a fuse ( built into them and lit by hand.) but the bigger shows all use electric set ups to fire them off. Red stone works best here imo

Redstone isn't a finite resource as priests trade it.
As for the idea itself...meh. I can just use dust for detonation and fire charge dispensers for lighting.

The tones are on the tail. Or, the answer is in the question. Or... some other appropriate phrase. IOW, repeaters seem to handle this just fine.

Why would you be setting up TNT next to your RS circuits??

Use a trip-wire hooked up to a series of downward-facing dispensers primed with flint and steel.

Meh! I don't see this as being any more effective than simply luring the mob in yourself, or using things like canals and water steams.

I don't know why I didn't think about this in my original post, but fuses could also be used to set off firework rockets.

Stay fluffy~
Pardon me, didn't realize that priest traded it. Mine must be holding back on me, perhaps there should be a culling?
OR we can just blow up TNT with redstone - this idea really isn't needed. We already have ways to blow up TNT.
^^^^ Click it! You know you want to...
I already mentioned that and gave reasons why fuses would be a good alternative to redstone.
