Using glass in the nether is pretty useless. You can build your house out of netherbrick and cobblestone, but what are you going to use for windows?
You can make lovely glass windows to complete your nether home, but just one ghast fireball and ... BOOM! The glass is destroyed and all of your hard work is undone.
Well ... If crumbly old netherrack can be smelted into netherbrick that can resist ghast fireballs and blase fireballs, how about smelting soul sand into a type of glass that also resists blaze and ghast fireballs?
Soul glass (or nether glass) would only be useful in the nether because of its fire resistance. Otherwise, it would be nearly identical to ordinary glass.
Perhaps soul glass might be useful for making enchanted glss containers or enchanted glass objects as well.
I like this idea. Kind of like bullet-proof glass.,, but Should be resistant to creeper blasts as well.and usable in the overworld. It could be more expensive to make... perhaps needed 4 blocks to make 16 panes... and perhaps be the glass that can be stained (rather than regular glass).
This is similar to the idea I posted for Craft-able Shatter Resistant Glass Blocks and Panes, but I kind of like the idea of using the soul sand in place of the regular sand idea, but I kind of don't at the same time...the problem I have though is that, soul sand is virtually infinite (especially with the nether reset), and a blast resistant/shatter resistant glass should have some more cost to it (which is why my original recipe used diamond).
But glass like this has value in the overworld too as it would be resistant to creeper and TNT as well, and especially on adventure maps.
I like this as well but diamonds, that's a little rich don't you think. Plus Diamonds aren't bast resistant. You know what is though, obsidian. Hence I think I saw somewhere on the forums about obsidian glass & etc, so why not have it here as well.
Honestly, my original thought was to make it intrinsically more expensive than glass, but upon reflection, perhaps you're right, diamond would be a bit much for a cost for what would effectively be transparent obsidian. The soul sand idea is clever, but Obsidian IS a form of volcanic glass already... so there might be a possibility of a recipe involving these??? or not....
I'm ok with the soul sand in the furnace idea to make a blast resistant glass. Maybe instead of being straight 'brownish' as SoulEmpire suggested, is could be clear like glass, but have that forlorn face visage (that is part of the soul sand texture) on the surface as a reflection highlights instead of the straight line hash marks of normal glass... then it could be further be dyed/stained from there.

Ceci n'est pas une signature.

Maybe have a texture something like this?
