So while discussing pod races in minecraft, the thought came about, how do you make them?
My solution: chariots.
With 1.6 coming to us we'll have rope leads so that works towards the idea even better.
You craft it like so:
Wheels (recipe makes 2 which is what's needed) - 4 planks in a + with an iron ingot in the middle.
Chariot - 5 planks in a U with 1 in the bottom middle and the wheels in the bottom corners.
works kinda like a boat and a mine cart hybrid. You take a rope lead and use it to attach you horse/pig to the chariot and then just steer like you would a boat. Can only go up 1 block at a time, breaks like a cart not a boat.
How does the horse move when pull the chariot ? At a slightly slower pace than usual ?
How can we control the horses speed ?
Can we use multiple horses ? Will multiple horses improve the speed of the chariots ?
What exactly is the benefit to using chariots over horses or donkeys ? Perhaps it could hold 2 double chests ?
How many players can fit in one chariot ? I'd assume 4 at max ?
Can chariots be controlled by a single player while 2 or 3 players sit back and relax ?
Will whips be used ? That sounds ... Strange ...

I doubt they'll be implementing any sort of vehicle that will hold/carry more than one player anytime soon. A long, long time ago, there was a similar suggestion regarding boats that could hold multiple players and still move through the water. At that time, several of the then "old guard" responded with various reasons why making vehicles that effectively took up more than 1 block of space in the game was impractical. I don't remember what those reasons were and I'm not going to chase down the link. Still, it's one of those old, old suggestions that even Mojang hasn't ever implemented; so I doubt it will ever happen.
Posted from a dying phone so I made it quick. BUT...
1 player only
1 horse or 1 pig
Sure. A double chest was what I had in mind.
Speed? Where we're going we dont need speed.
We dont have whips because no one supported my suggestion for them...jk moderator gods.
It's a fun element more than a 100% practical element. I mean hey...feel free to tweak the idea to be more useful. I barely know how horses and donkeys work. I'm used to pigs. But the one constant should be 1 horse or pig, 1 rider, simple recipe. I've been on the forums long enough to know people are gonna come up with a tier system for different chariots, ridiculous recipes, strengths and weaknesses and all the mobs and biomes that should spawn with the chariot so I'm gonna go ahead and say keep it wooden with 0 tiers because like I said it's a boat-minecart hybrid that uses a pig or a horse to pull and was created from a discussion on races.
having someone mount the horse/bear/pig makes it seem more like a carriage rather than a chariot. and when you say 4 chests, is that 2 doubles or 4 doubles? I would think 4 doubles is excessive.
Typically, MC generally doesn't worry about component intermediate 'parts' unless there are multiple recipes that would require the same part.
It appears that this Chariot system (which was originally suggested for 'pod' racing) Has more carry capacity with double chests than the minecart with chest, and to make up for the extra carry capacity, it is drastically slower than using a horse alone (which kind of defeats the purpose of racing).
