What if when you punched a zombie, his arm came off? Or what if you shot a skeleton, you knocked one of his legs off?
The mobs would lose their heads as they lost health. The mobs would lose either a leg or an arm for every 4 hearts of health they lost. When they head one heart of health left, their heads would come off too. The lost limbs would appear as entities that could be picked up. Picking up a (Wither) skeletons arm or leg would give the player one bone. A zombie (pigman) arm of leg would give the player rotten flesh.
Usually, the head would just disappear from the body of the mob, but rarely, it too would fall as entity, which could be picked up, rewarding the player with a mob head.
When a mob is healed (Via potion), it will regrow it's limbs
Additionally, in rare cases, the bow or sword a mob was holding will fall off with the limb, which could also be picked up.
Probably you are going to have issues with lag on this....maybe worse than the dynamic lighting proposal. You are increasing the load on items to track, and effectively switching MOB's as they become injured/healed.
I don't know... the more I think about it... maybe it could work...
But this would impact the drop rate of items (like bone and rotten flesh), and might also impact the MOB Mobility and Combat effectiveness as they deteriorate.
And you guys rejected the dynamic lighting from torches idea because of the lag it would cause????? Did you think this one through?
I have thought this one through, and I doubt that it would cause much lag. See, the mob's hitboxes wouldn't change, even after losing a limb. The limb that the mob lost would simply turn invisisble. The fallen limb would be an entity, behaving like a shot arrow.

I guess I can see that working... actually, the more I think about it... the more I can see how this might be applied without too much impact on system resources...(I even amended my post from above).

But this would impact the drop rate of items (like bone and rotten flesh), and might also impact the MOB Mobility and Combat effectiveness as they deteriorate. A zombie would lose a leg and an arm, and his head. He would still have one leg to hop on and one to hit with. A (Wither) skeleton and zombie pigman would only lose their left arm, except in the rare instances where the weapon fell with the limb, in which case, yes, the combat effectivesness would decrease. As for the drop rate, a mob would lose up to two limbs (Sometimes it might lose only one, or even none at all). That's a maximum of two bones or rotten flesh per mob. Arrows, coal, gold nuggets and the rare drops would be dropped when the entire mob was killed.
Hrm... that's actually seem pretty elegant for handling... but if their combat effectiveness decreases as they take damage, that would mean their starting combat effectiveness should be slightly increased over current in order to balance the penalties they would be taking that they aren't taking now...Which would make them ore deadly when they are not damaged.
I'm warming up to this, I think I like it. Support.
How could they implement that ? That does make combat sound slightly more interesting though ...
A simple strategy would be to have multiple MOB templates for each MOB where once the health dropped to a certain level, the game arbitrarily switches to using the appropriate stat template for that MOB at that particular level of health. Each template having different levels of mobility speed, damage, 3d-frame, etc.
Sounds good to me , and there would be no lag unless you killed hundreds of mobs at the same time .
Yeah, it would be roughly the same latency induced by any other MOB handling, and the transitions would be virtually transparent as far as processing power is concerned.
I just had another idea: In the rare cases where the monster's head falls off, what if the head turned into another mob (Like a slime) and hopped around biting at the players ankles? It might do on heart of damage per hit, and have 1 heart of health in total. When killed, they would drop the head.

Or... It could just drop as a MOB Head....without it turning into another MOB.
I'm still thinking it over, trying to balance personal pros and cons to the idea. Just a few quick questions: what happens with mobs like creepers, ghasts, and silverfish? Also, would this also extend to passive and neutral mobs or what?

I think I'll leave the other mobs alone, it will just happen to the undead mobs
I really like this idea, although it might be hard to implement. Lag might be a problem. I have to admit though, I like suggestions that enhance combat, so I support.

I don't think lag will be an issue, but thanks tor the support

I'd say arms is good enough, Then you don't have to compensate to create a new battle system to really make it work.
Because like Greg said, I think this would cause a lot of confusion for the system as it is now.
I'm saying because every mob stands up strait, as opposed to laying down and moving etc. But I'm not sure how spiders fit into the system so I could be wrong.

If they lost and arm and a leg, they would still move like normal. Nothing would change beside their texture. (Although, we could change the system and have mobs do reduced damage)
And this would only apply to undead mobs, all other mobs would die normally.

And if it applied to everything? Would the alive mobs just 'bleed out'? lol

I suppose that other mobs could have some special affect when killed (Not blood though). But the movies and shows always have zombies falling apart, or having gaping holes through their heads, which is why I suggested this for just the undead.
