I've seen a grappling hook used in a mod, it could have it's uses...and unlike the ender pearl... it was reusable... I don't agree with the recipe though...
There would be a new string arrow (Crafted from 2 string and an arrow). What you would do is open your inventory, pick up the string arrow, hover it over your bow and press X. Then, with the laoded bow, you just shoot. The arrow would attack to a block, and would have a string attaching the arrow to the bow. To place the arrow's string, move the crosshairs over the side of a block and left trigger. A small hit box will appear, and you can left trigger againwith your bow to hang on the string. If the destination is sloped down, the will slide on your bow to the arrow. Left triggering again will break the arrow string and make you drop to the ground.

it is a better idea than mine, but how many blocks can it reach, cant be too op
Probably as far as you can shoot an arrow. Either that, or the string arrow shoots half the distance
I can shoot an arrow pretty far... this should not be longer than trip wire can span (which is 40 blocks in length), and even I feel that is too OP. I think the arrow should project/arc the same as a normal arrow... just have it stop and fall to the ground if it doesn't hit a block within it's range. A 10 block range (or less) might be more appropriate.

You can throw enderpearls pretty far, about the same distance as an arrow. And you instantly teleport to the spot, whereas with the bow, you slide down, relatively slowly, and risk being shot at along the way. Bow sliding down a hanging wire might look cool, but enderpearls are more practical.

If the grapple arrow is limited to only lateral downward movement (descending over a horizontal distance), then I'm ok with farther ranges being used. but if that's the case, I think we should go back to reconsidering the OP's grappling hook request (which fits fine in the MC theme if you ask me) in order to assist with vertical ascending or descending, to which the player can interact with it in the same way they interact with vines for climbing purposes.

And then all you'd have to do is either hold up on the left analog stick... or hold A like in water to climb perhaps?
I think he means that the zipline should not be so easy to construct as simply shooting an arrow from point A to point B, that someone would have to actively secure it at both ends before it would be functional to be used as a zipline. That way, players would not just be going about and using it as a crutch to get around many in-game obstacles and placing ziplines whilly-nilly here and there.

Hmm... Okay.
I think I'd rather have it act more like the ender pearl perhaps.. Not sure if it was you that suggested it or not.

well, its not like they can put them up every were. there would prob be a max zipline amount, kinda like mobs, that way its not op. and mabey after the zipline is used it could go back into the persons inventory. or mabeya a nfew uses. but i have poosted another thread on rope( on my other account) and it may help, i have been having trouble finding it. i wil edit this post wen i do.

I basically suggested zip-lining.
Well... someone has to build it no?
Why old ones but not new ones?
