Hey guys. This is my first post and I plan to add a few more suggestions in time. These suggestions are the big reasons that I got an account on the forums. Now, on to business:
Appearance: These grassland redwood trees would be an uncommon (not rare, just uncommon) tree that would generate in grassland biomes (hence the name). It would be a very large tree that spawns with a 3 by 3 base and has a height varying between 40 and 100 blocks tall if including both leaves and wood. The wood would look like oak wood with a slight red tint and the leaves would look like oak leaves with the tint of spruce leaves (the leaves could have a different look). It would have branches much like a jungle tree's, but leaves would slowly engulf the trunk as you neared the top. Unlike other types of trees, the redwood trees will have wood "grow" into the ground, acting as roots (you have to mine these as well for the tree to fully decay). These roots would be random wood blocks that spawn up to three blocks under the tree and up to two blocks away from the trunk.
Drops and behaviors: When mined, you would get redwood with a rare chance of getting mossy redwood. Like other wood, redwood (and mossy redwood) can be crafted into its respectable planks, stairs, and slabs, which would also have a red tint on them compared to oak wood. Leaves, when they decay, will drop redwood saplings. All products of this tree will act the same as all other types of wood with just a different appearance.
Spawning: To spawn a redwood tree, you have to place 9 redwood saplings in a 3 by 3 square on grass in any biome. The growth requirements are the same as other trees except that you need a ground of grass in a 7 by 7 by 3 dimension- 7 blocks long, 7 blocks wide, and 3 blocks deep. The only way the tree will officially spawn is by adding bone meal.
Adding grassland redwood trees add a little more variety to Minecraft and will give an upper hand for someone who's stuck out in the open with no shelter. Please comment and say what's good about the idea and what could be added to it. Thanks. Sorry if this was suggested already.
I see what you are saying. I hadn't thought about that too much when I posted this because I was basing my idea on the California Redwoods that have trunks that are bigger than two men with their arms spread. Also when you see one of these behemoths you notice that they are (correct me if I'm wrong) a lot of times around a hunred or so feet tall. Not a bad idea though. Certainly not. Maybe this could be a new mega biome, kind of like on the PC version where you have taiga and mega taiga, this could be implimented here with grasslands.
Good idea. I'm for both the mega version, and the small version. The saplings should have a 1 in 30 chance of dropping. And the mossy versions should be their own wood type, and shouldn't be craftable with the normal wood to make the stairs.

Redwood is a rapidly growing tree, and some individual trees have been measured at more than 360 feet in height, making it the tallest measured tree species on the earth. In favorable situations, trees 20 years old may average 50 feet in height and 8 inches in diameter. Average mature trees are from 200 to 240 feet high with diameters of 10 to 15 feet at 4 feet 8 inches above the ground.
Exceptional individuals sometimes reach a height of 350 feet, a diameter of over 20 feet, and an age of approximately 2000 years.
But a block side is roughly a meter (just a little over 3 feet) so 100 blocks in height would be about right for the giant version (measuring 300+ feet tall). However, a diameter of about 20 feet is about a 6 foot diameter, which 'could' occupy a 6 block by 6 block space and if you wanted to approximate roundness, just not use the corners (and the adjacent blocks) of that square for the trunk base, such as:
This tree could have several height variants, from young growth, 1x1 block trunk @ 10 blocks in height, to progressively older growth to include the standard 2x2 that is used for jungle trees @ 30 blocks in height, 3x3 @ 50 blocks in height, 4x4 (without the corners) @ 75 blocks in height, and 5x5 (without the corners) @ 90 blocks in height. Such as:
I would recommend, like jungle trees, if the saplings are planted in the right configuration, the appropriate sized tree can spawn on its own, but bone meal is faster.
Additional suggestion, instead of strictly random for the mossy wood blocks... Only some of the blocks near the base of a 4x4 or larger tree along the north side of the tree would be composed of mossy log blocks, most of the tree would be composed of the normal redwoods
Thanks for the info. Also I like what you're getting onto because in survival, the mossy redwood would help give players a sense of direction like sunflowers do in the PC. As for the growth, It makes a lot of sense and adds something else that makes this tree different than other trees in Minecraft. I'm on board with that.

Another way to differentiate them would be to incorporate a tapered trunk system where the base is thicker then the top, some of the tiers would have to be modified for the intervals, bu the even # block sides stack well, as do the odd # sides, for interim pieces:
... and continues this thickness for 10 blocks before changing to the following full 4x4 pattern for the next 15 blocks before switching to the above 4x4 pattern for the next 25 blocks:

...and just do the remaining height at the standard 2x2.
If it started with an odd base, this flows a little easier for the transitions:
I like the idea of new tree types but doesn't the PC already have redwood trees and savannah trees? or am I thinking of dark oak wood and savannah trees?
You're thinking of the Acacia Trees that grow in the Savanah Biome and Dark Oak Trees which are found in the Roofed Forested Biome.

And also I'm often typing on my xbox without a keyboard (like right now). Thank you microsoft for apps like internet explorer.
