Strangely on the X360 edition, when I used the menu to save game, and left the main menu open, the game continued in the background.
So when I saved the game, and after saving it came back to the main menu, I left it there and went to get a smoke, game kept running in the background, a bug walked over my boundary wall and killed me.
Now that sucks having the game running even though im not actively playing it and a menu is open!!
I've only noticed the game not pausing when playing multiplayer... and that sort of makes sense... you don't necessarily want to have everyone else have to wait on each other each time one person has to get up to do something or other in a Multiplayer environment. I haven't noticed this happen in my solo games.
It has always happened to me. I start a new world, I even did some worlds when I didn't have xbox live gold and when I pressed the menu to "pause" the game I noticed that animals around me were still moving and I also noticed that clouds kept moving ,and once in night I had the bad luck of being infront of a creeper so instead of pausing , in my background I saw the creeper moving , and my character exploding.
In solo or multiplayer , there is no "pause" for the game , at least in my xbox 360
Game IS pausing just fine for me in OFFLINE, SINGLE PLAYER. Online games do not pause so that others can drop in and play (since not all online games are invite only). If you're having trouble pausing a single-player game, exit that world and be sure to uncheck "online game" before you load it up.
Now it seems the game does not pause. I pressed start, like I always used to do, and switched channel for a few hours. Not only was I dead, probably by a zombie, but I had to start at the spawn point to continue, since it seems the game had autosaved while I was dead.

Is this a glitch following the last update?
It might be a new development/bug, but I question why anyone playing in single-player offline mode would leave their Xbox running inside their game while they watched TV for a few hours. Do the environment and your power bill a favor... save the game, exit and shut the console down while you watch TV.
It should be if everyone pauses the game should also pause .
Perhaps, but I'm not convinced it would be all that widely used (e.g. most multiplayer games I've been a part off don't even manage to get everyone to sleep in a bed at the same time in order to make night pass more quickly). Also, 4J would still have to make it so that people can join and leave the game online at will without affecting the flow of the other players (I'd hate to see the game pause everytime someone wanted to join or leave the world)... and one player pausing should definitely not arbitrarily pause everyone (If it were that way, I could see one of the little tots I play with really annoying everyone else by spamming the pause button!) Perhaps they could give paused players a temporary immunity zone that mobs would not enter (albeit, such a feature could be abused by players just pausing to get out of trouble. However, it would still be better than one player continually pausing everyone else).
If EVERYONE pauses their games at the same time ... The game will pause .
That's what I was understanding... like beds... if everyone sleeps in a bed at the same time, the game will advance to the next morning. However, it's difficult to get a group of people to agree to sleep all at once; pausing all at once will likely have the same issue. There will always be someone doing something that they don't want to pause... I can hear the whining already.
What about splitscreen ? I learnt that the hard way : We both paused to get some more drinks . And when we came back , there was a hole in our house and we where being gunned by skeletons ... Turns out we built on top of a skeleton spawner ...
How useful would've the pause feature have been ?
I believe, in splitscreen (offline), you can get away with hitting the center X button instead, bringing up the Xbox Guide (pausing the entire console)... and then just using "B" (Back) to cancel the screen when you return.
Just did a brief test on the above - it doesn't stop time in the game. However, the player may be somehow protected. Left two players in splitscreen out in the open overnight (on Easy) with the Xbox dashboard displayed... both were unharmed although the time of day in the game had clearly advanced. Requires further tests to be sure though... might have just been lucky. Don't have time right now.
Just did a second test - center X button does not do anything... death is still possible (although it did seem to take an inordinately long period of time).
So, It think that making the center X button pause the entire game regardless of whether it is online or not would be a good compromise. The ingame pause menu (i.e. hitting the start button) could work as it does now... not pausing the game if the game is online or has more than one player in it... but then, if the host desires to stop the game entirely, they could depress the center X button and the game and all players in the game could be paused.

Your concerns has been noted...
