So I have an idea.... and I think it's pretty good. It's been shot down before because "you can punch mobs and your dogs will attack them", but I wanted to elaborate a little.
If no plans are being made to assign commands to the D-pad on an Xbox controller, why can't we put dog commands on them? Look at a mob and hit up on the D-pad tells your dog to attack that mob. (Similar to punching, except long range capable).
Other possible commands could be:
Up- "Sic 'em" (as stated above)
Down- Toggle Stay/Follow mode
Left- Go there and wait
Right- Retreat/Heel
etc.
Thoughts? Other commands/tricks that would be cool or useful?
Other than that there are numerous other threads that have proposed/suggested various uses for the d-pad so I'm not to sure that I agree that there aren't any plans for the d-pad in the future... but hypothetically, if I have 6 dogs, how would this command system differentiate between each dog for a specific command, would we have to target the specific dog? or do you envision a drop down list of some sort?
I hadn't considered multiple dogs before you mentioned it. Perhaps...
The toggle follow/stay command would be specific to the dog you're looking at (crosshairs on)
The attack command could only apply to dogs in the "follow" mode
For things like "Go wait there" and the like, perhaps you could highlight the dog(s) you intend to command with the back button? (I don't recall what this does, if anything, at the moment. maybe skins? Regardless, whatever it is could be moved to the start menu if this idea REALLY wanted to be wedged in). Alternatively, a combination of buttons while looking at a dog and continue to hold them down while looking around at other dogs could highlight multiple dogs at once. Personally, I believe that's getting a bit too complex. For the sake of simplicity, I'd say commands apply to dogs that are in "follow" mode, unless it's the "follow/stay" command in which case it applies to the dog you're looking at.
Maybe a modifier key? hiding a d-pad command would work only for dogs in follow mode, while holding L-trigger and hitting d-pad commands would apply to ALL dogs? Definitely something to ponder. I guess it really boils down to which commands are chosen?
(Mind you that you said nothing about this being hostile-only.)
Up: As you said, just smack something. Having dogs automatically attack mobs would be more annoying then beneficial.
Down: Got it already.
Left: Can't you just have it follow you to "there" and make it sit? If it's a specific block, just get it near and push until it's on the spot.
Right: That has "Falling off cliffs!" written all over it; heeling can be done by making them sit.
The commands aren't literal. My idea is to use the D-Pad for dog commands, not the specific commands I listed. I'm sure there are a number of better replacements for commands. As far as not needing the examples, it's true to a point. Those some key differences apply. Your buddy accidentally hits you while mining (this happens often to me, as I'm sure it does others) and then he gets swarmed by your dogs and they kill him. But wait? Now you just hit the d-pad and cancel all dog aggression? It's a very rough idea, but it's an idea.
To be real, we don't NEED a lot of things in Minecraft. They're included because they're cool/fun.
