A very simple idea and had been done before in the modding community... Just never done in the main game and I don't understand why...
Basically, instead of having to cut down trees or break leaves blocks to get apples, every now and then you will get a tree (grown or generated) which can support up to 4 apples. These apples will be grow and eventually be shown on 4 leaves blocks on said tree. Once you see them, you can use the leaves blocks (like one would do with a crafting table) and it'll knock the apple off the block without needing to destroy it.
When you harvest all apples, then you can wait for awhile and new apples will eventually grow in their place...
Very simple idea and can help with apple farming quite a lot. Though note there should be a small chance for a normal tree (grown by the player or generated by the game) to be an apple supporting tree. It is obviously random and keep players from easily getting apples.
In order to start an apple farm, you must have a lot of saplings and plant them. When they are grown, keep an eye on them for a few days. The ones (or if none of them) ends up having apples, cut them down and replant... Redo this process until you the desired number of apple trees in your farm.
So... What you guys say? Apple farming or not?
^
This is what I am talking about.
So basically, every once in a while, an oak tree will turn into an apple tree. Then you can chop down the tree, get the apple tree saplings, and then regrow the trees?

If that's all there is to it, apple farming would be faster if one enchants a shovel with efficiency IV and beats the beats out of a bunch of Oak trees.
I have over 8 stacks of Apples on my Superflat from doing that. As such, I don't see a need for a tree whose sole function is to change how a food source is acquired.

No. An oak tree has potential in grow into an apple tree which can support apples growing on the leaves (small chance of doing so).
UNLESS you would rather have an apple tree as it's own tree (like in the mod), which I would prefer too but I fear that might make apples too easily acquired and with gold nuggets already easy to get too (due to zombie pigmen), that would mean easy golden apples.
In that case, then it would be different. An apple tree would have it's own leaves, logs, and sapling. It will be a rare spawn (like pumpkins and melons) and upon finding one, you can cut it down for the saplings and grow your own easily...
I don't see a need for a tree whose sole function is to change how a food source is acquired.
Except that it keeps you from using a tool, enchantment points, and wasting time on beating the crap out of oak trees... Instead, you can just have three or four of these trees PERMANENTLY in your farm and simply just harvert apples from them as they grow without having to destroy the leaves or the tree itself...
Like I said, you don't destroy the leaves to get the apple. Thusly the block remains unharmed and will be able to grow another apple for harvesting later... Kinda like melons almost... You get the melon block safely without needing to break the stem (and thusly needing to replant it).
I see a big need for this as it makes a food source less of a pain to get. (Yet still need to make sure the actually apple trees themselves are rare).
I've never seen it suggested before. At least within the time I've been around on these forums, specifically this section.
I also never seen this in a mod EXCEPT for the mod called "MineLittleBrony"... (Which honestly surprises me that this idea doesn't have it's own mod)...
Actually, scratch the original idea; maybe. It wouldn't really matter how common the apples are anyways... You can make a healing potion just as easy with melons (FYI: Gold nuggets + melon = glistering melon thing which I believe is the ingredient to make a healing potion).
So I guess it doesn't really matter if golden apples are about as easy to get or not...
FYI: Farm normal apples at home and farm gold nuggets from zombie pigmen. Make golden apples. About the same with healing potions, except you need the extra work with alchemy.
I simply can't understand why we can't farm apples... (Technically speaking, apples are not farmed at all in the base Minecraft game. It's just random loot when breaking leaves, nothing more).
So I wish to farm apples but also wish to keep it balanced for multiplayer (though I don't play MC online anyways so it doen't matter).

There's already food sources out the yin yang... now that potatoes and carrots were added. But.. did that function (change how the food source is required in a sense) stop it from getting in the game? No. It still made it.
Besides.. who said that the apple tree's sole function is to produce apples and apples only? What if.. suddenly there was Applewood Planks, wood, stairs, etc?
If that's all there is to it, apple farming would be faster if one enchants a shovel with efficiency IV and beats the beats out of a bunch of Oak trees.
Speaking of enchantments, does Fortune affect apple and sapling drops?
..I'd like to think it does personally. I mean.. if you use a fortune pick axe on gravel.. you get nothing but flint. So I'm inclined to think so
I tried it with a pickaxe with fortune, didn't work. Maybe fortune shears, buy idk.
Anyways, I think I get what jusey is saying. Basically, every once in a while, an oak tree will generate 'apple leaves'. You can left trigger the leaves, and an apple will fall off. I like the idea, so here's my rendition:
Rarely, an oak will spawn with 3d apples on the bottom (usually one, rarely 2 or 3). And then you break the apple, and it will drop. 1 in 20 trees will spawn with apples. Its basically the same idea, but with 3d apples, which I would prefer to see
3D apples is just fine. I don't mind either way... Just a way to actually farm apples would be nice but at the same time, still rare enough so it wouldn't be abused (along with zombie pigmen farm) to get golden apples.
I think that apples should be able to be farmed because i hate that moment when i am casually looking through my chest and i see stacks and stacks of gold. I always immediately think " better save these for when i get my apples"

Given the percentage chance that an apple drops from a leaf block (5%, if I'm not mistaken), it's highly possible to farm them already. The main problem I have with this idea is that, if they were to implement this, they're spending time they could be using to add completely new features, re-iterating an earlier addition that, in all honesty, doesn't need to be changed.
But that's just my opinion, so unfortunately, No Support.
Farming is when you have full control over the situation and are able to profit from it with a 100% success rate. Growing plants, melons, etc are all 100% success rate, when in a controlled environment.
With apples, it is not like that. It is just a small chance of getting an apple from a leaves block, thusly you have a chance to get an apple as loot from a tree... There is nothing you can do to control this or make it a 100% success rate...
So by that definition, it is impossible to currently farm apples.
Also, adding new features is nice and all but improving on current ones is also a required thing. Plus sometimes, I would rather see a developer improve on something in a good way, which can help a lot of players and give them all an useful method than add a brand new feature which could be highly glitchy or even extremely bad for the game (which had happened before).
So really that argument I considered as a personal opinion and not a valid argument to really go against something...
In my opinion, one should NEVER support or dissupport something base on arguments like that... They should base their support or dissupport on the actual idea itself and if it is a reasonable thing to do or not. And I honestly see adding apple trees as a fully reasonable thing to do. I really do not see any valid reasons why NOT do it. (Just a valid reason why NOT make them common like other trees).
There is already numerous way to acquire food in the game so I can understand that it is kind of pointless to invest time and effort into a new idea that sources food however I believe the more things in Minecraft the better (within reason) so I support the idea.
I know I've mentioned this several times in this forum about how it would make more sense for apples to be dropped from an actual apple tree. Last time I checked you can't get apples from oak trees...
I would suggest a slight alteration to the idea; instead of generating leaf block with apples inside of them, why not generate apples that hang underneath the main canopy. The canopy would be at least 2 blocks above the ground, and wider than the average oak tree. The apples will regenerate like eggs, after at least 5 minutes, and before 10 minutes, maybe a bit longer. This would remove the need to have to remove leaf blocks or make use of a crafting table or inventory crafting square.
Not only this, but it would add a new type of wood to the world that would extend the diversity of wooden structures and builds. We know from the PC version that they have no issue adding new trees and woods to the game (Acacia), so would it be that much effort to add in an apple tree with hanging apples?
This idea would hopefully encourage players to establish an apple farm for growing a food source, rather than specifically a source of wood. For the players that like to make elaborate or decorative farms, what would be better than to add a large apple orchard.
As a side note - the main reason why I support this - I know Minecraft doesn't always incorporate logic into mechanics, blocks, and items, but apples being dropped by EVERY type of tree available has never sat well with me...
SUPPORT!
