We have Ender portals and Nether portals but we don't have regular portals. How about having portals that will take you to another portal on the world. This could be great for PvP Arenas, Mini-games, etc. Maybe use red stone blocks to build a 5x4 portal and activate with Flint & Steel just like you do with the Nether portal?
I don't think this has been suggested before but if it has I'm sorry because I didn't find it in the search engine.

If worlds were larger, this might be a useful idea. [No, I don't think they are too small] As BP said, rails are the ticket. They make travel very fast and easy. Some people use nether portals to move quickly across their worlds. I don't, but good for them. Play mc any way you want, but I'm afraid surface portals could potentially muck up a good thing.
I could also see this as possibly killing off rails or causing a lot less people to use rails. Why would someone want to use rails to get somewhere when they could instantly travel to another part of the world with a portal. I don't think this would be a good idea.

I was thinking they would work the same as Nether portals where you cross through one and get to other. However, if there are multiple then each one would probably interfere with the other one unless there is some alternative someone can think of. I'm thinking mobs shouldn't be able to go through portals.

I'm wondering about that now and I am not sure this could after all. I would have to find the difference between using railways and Portals so that neither one is better than the other.
Railways would be more direct than portals so at least I have that.

Redstone blocks are not in the Xbox yet, so you wouldn't be able to make a portal out of those blocks.
I'm not sure about this idea, needs a bit more details though
