Candles would be good for decoration and that's really it. I would support the idea but it's a fairly minor detail that doesn't really make that much of a difference either way.
Torches are great and all. But it would be nice to put down candles on tables and such.
Of course if there was candles, we would have to have bee's, so we can get wax for the candles. We have string from spiders already, for the wick.
So, I guess my suggestion would be, bees, beehives and candles.
I thoguth this a long time ago as well.
Cause I often like to make elaborate dinner tables in the houses I make so.. candles (either in some sort of stand so it's like more than 1 candle in a single block's worth of space) or like a mini torch I'm relatively okay with.
But for the sake of it... I don't know... maybe have the ability to have it be different colours. Candles are in different colours like crazy so why not.
I don't think we really need candles, but I would like to see torches have an added effect. When you're physically holding one in your hand, it gives out light to the surroundings. It would be useful in small scale exploring of caves I think, and could have other applications in adventure worlds.
I'd rather that be a combination of the torch and the helmet. So it could be like a proper miners helmet or something.

I've always wished that the torches could give out light while you are holding them, it only makes sense. Plus I'd like to be able to place a torch on the edge of my boat while using it to cross bodies of water at night, or even place one on minecarts. What they could do that would be interesting is add lanterns that could give off light when you hold them and you could attach them to boats and minecarts as well. You could also place them everywhere you can normally place torches. They wouldn't be quite as bright as torches, but bright enough to keep mobs from spawning and they would be constructed from glass blocks and torches.

I'm not sure how I feel about colored candles... although we do have other colored material. but for the sake of argument about candles in general, I like the idea of being able to place multiple candles in the same block space... up to a reasonable amount... say 5? up to one in each corner with one in the center?
Were this to be implemented, I think a candelabra should be implemented to hold the candles (ie. they can't be placed on their own, they can only be placed inside the candelabra itself). Which could be made of gold, iron, or diamond depending on how you want it to look, and can be placed like a torch to the top or a side of a block. the Candelabra could automatically adjust to how many holders are needed based on how many candles are 'inside it' (with a minimum of 1 for an empty candelabra / otherwise operates like a chest for 0-5 candles). The Luminosity provided by candelabra block itself could vary by how many candles are in it at the time:

Light like this creates this really blotchy shadowing and shading. The lighting constantly needs to be updated, so it also creates lots of lag.

As such I do not support this.
Torches are candley enough.
Stay fluffy~
Candles are not necessary as we have torches which are very close to the same thing.

Why?
You can do that?
Misread

0 candles = 0 Light level
1 candle = 10 Light level
2 candles = 12 Light level
3 candles = 13 Light level
4 candles = 14 Light level
5 candles = 15 Light level
** The cake block could have similar properties to the candelabra in that you could place candles on them (like a birthday cake).

I like that idea.
and yeah I was trying to get that too.. the candelabra but I didn't know what it was called. I guess "candle holder" could've worked but whatever.
Gold and Iron would be excellent. But for the sake of argument once again I'd say diamond as well.
Could also use quartz for white candelabra's, diamond for that blue-crystalline look, gold for gold colored and iron for something silver-ish styled.
Yup pretty much what I was thinking. I just didn't think of quartz
