If the only purpose is to trick a player into accidentally poisoning themselves why not just suggest that regular apples have small chance to poison the player, like how rotten flesh has a small chance to NOT poison a player.
I agree. I mean, what is the purpose other than poisoning and killing yourself?

I found this image online of a crafting recipe for poisoning food. We should do the same for apples:
Unlike some skeptical people posting replies (which skeptical people are vital to suggestions, they help work out kinks you may not have known about), I think the Poisoned Apple has a lot of potential, and I think it's a great idea.
Firstly, I'll have to agree, it shouldn't be green. If youre going to poison someone, don't make it obvious.
One fix for this problem would be to make the poison apple green, and call it "Poisonous Apple". This apple will be able to be used in brewing, crafting recipes, etc. Craft it with red dye, and you get a poisonous apple that's red and just called "Apple". Everybody wins(except the guy that eats it. He's a chump.).
Next, it may be a little over-powered to make it kill you. Perhaps just a bit longer version of Poison Effect, and add in Nausea, Blindness, or something along those lines to make things a little more interesting, but not quite as intense.
The crafting possibilities can branch out quite far from the Poisonous Apple, in my opinion. As previously mentioned, poisonous arrows, as well as perhaps the ability to craft it with another food item, which will then make it into it's poisonous counterpart. If it's even possible, imagine the Thorns enchantment for armor, only it inflicts poison when you get attacked. All you'd do is craft the Poisonous Apple with an armor piece(of course, it's not an enchantment, so it would have to wear off either in time, or with a certain amount to hits you take). These are some ideas I came up with off the top of my head. The possibilities are endless.
As someone stated, why would you use Poisonous Apples to make Poisonous Arrows when you can just use a Potion of Poison? Let me answer that. Many people that oppose the Poisonous Apple make the argument that it's "too much of a hassle" for the potential crafting recipes. However, if Potions were used to make Poisonous Arrows, that would mean you'd need to brew that potion, meaning you'd have to have a brewing machine, only crafted with a Blaze Rod, only obtainable through exploration of the Nether. Why do all that "hassle" when you can simply loot a Poisonous Apple from a mine shaft, and craft it with some arrows? This is one example of your own reasoning put into the Poisonous Apple's favor. How about dem apples?
Another crafting implementation would be the ability to craft the disguised apple I mentioned earlier into whatappear to be a golden apple by using gold. The cost of crafting is higher, but the effect of the apple would become more potent. With a more potent Poisonous Golden Apple, you could craft more potent Poisonous Arrows.
Also, a personal message to all the Minecrafters that are skeptical of the Poisonous Apple: Thank you. Without people willing to test the strength of a suggestion, problems with the suggestion wouldn't be fixed. With the problems you present, solutions can be made. Look at villagers for instance. They used to be without function. Now the make trades, and soon they'll be able to harvest their farms and feed the village. The "pointless" Poisonous Apple has evolved just by skeptics being, well, skeptical. And who knows, MechanicalWood, maybe Poisonous Potatoes will be used to craft the Poisonous Apple. Only time and luck will tell.
Keep the suggestions coming, and keep being skeptical. That's what makes the world go 'round.
I didn't like this thread up until that last post. It was a long battle but I think poisoned apples could be added but why make it red or green when you could make it glowing gold? It's an enchanted apple isn't it... Just the wrong way.
The only thing I don't understand is why we want it? We have poison and such already. Were you hoping for a more covert way to kill people?
IMO, Labeling an apple as poisoned is pointless UNLESS it is an ingredient to other recipes of some sort (craftin/potion), no idiot is going to sit there and just eat them. "Herp Dee Derp... Hey look!!! One o' dem poison't applez... Ahh shure em hung-ray, Ahh bet dis iz sum good eats!!!! NOM! NOM! NOM! NOM! Mmmmm...Mmmmm!!! Det shure waz gud! HURK! <thud>"
What about poisonous potatoes? They are labeled with the word "poison" as well. So why can't we have poisonous apples?

Now that you mention it... I have to object to poisonous potatoes as well... they serve absolutely no purpose in the game at all and are too easily identifiable as being poisonous. Under the same premise, I would have to say that the poisonous potato is an equally ill thought out idea... but someone somewhere thought it was a good enough idea to add to the game... so if that is the rational, then sure, why not add another useless item to the game that adds nothing to the overall play itself, especially when there are far better ideas out there that the developers could be devoting their time and attention towards.

And carrot on a stick, and sponge (since it's creative only but would love to see it as its survival purpose), even the cauldron and many other things.
The thing that gets me is.. like in the crafting table.. it annoys me how there's multiples of the same item, just made differently. Only example I can think of right now is torches. Why have two spaces for the two types of torches when both torches are equal in lighting, etc? It just takes up unneeded space in the crafting table (To basically conclude I think the Crafting Table, and the Creative Menu need to be overhauled in terms of organization)

That's a good point... there isn't multiple stick recipes, one for each type of plank to use in the recipe... why should there be multiple torch recipes, especially when the system could just use the charcoal first if it is available, and use coal secondarily if charcoal is not available (since charcoal is technically a renewable resource and coal is not, plus coal has trade value and charcoal doesn't)
